  1. What Makes A True Hero?

  2. Uh….. Um.. Moving on?

  3. My Personal Criteria For What Makes A Hero: • A hero must be someone that puts others before himself/herself • Someone that motivates and inspires others from doubt • Does what is necessary but never looks for something in return • Is willing to go through sacrifice for others • Wants to be a contribution in making the world/community a better place for all • Always does the right decisions and actions in life • Someone that can be a role model for others to follow • Doesn’t let the odds stack up against himself/herself

  4. Rick Hansen Place of Birth: Port Alberni, British Columbia Born: August 26, 1957

  5. Who is Rick Hansen? • Rick Hansen was an average Canadian that enjoyed playing sports and fishing as a youth • He was coming back from a fishing trip when he unfortunately got into an accident and was left paraplegic at the age of 15 • Rick was able to accept his condition, he continued his education and graduated from high school • He was the first physically handicapped student to graduate in physical education at the University of British Columbia • Rick believed it was important for handicapped people such as himself to have goals for themselves, but not goals out of their reach • After discovering about Terry Fox, he was truly inspired and wanted to do something similar

  6. What Did He Do? • Rick wanted to begin his own tour to raise funds for spinal cord research • In 1975, he completed his tour and had visited 34 countries on 4 different continents • His tour raised over 10 million dollars that would be used to eventually improve the lives of handicapped people around the world • Rick Hansen was someone very inspiring to others as he himself was inspired to those who came before him • He continued to be active in sports and served in various capacities with fund-raising and health care organizations

  7. Summary So why do I think Rick Hanson is a true hero? He is someone that perfectly fit my criteria. Even though he was handicapped at a young age, he didn’t care much about himself he moved on and wanted the experience of other people with his disability to be more enhanced than his was. He became an inspiration to many people even those without a disability, he made people feel better about themselves. He graduated in physical education even with his condition, he sacrificed his time and ran across 34 countries, he raised over 10 million dollars for spinal cord research and throughout his life he continued making fund-raisers and health care organizations.
