Universal Design– An Introduction Rebecca C. Cory, PhD Open Course Library Universal Design Consultant July 2010
Plan for Today • Start the discussion about Universal Design– hopefully raise more questions than answers • Think about what else we need to learn as we move forward.
Overview • Imagine the greatest diversity of learners, then design for them • Fits with OCL goals for usability world-wide • Most importantly– Universal Design is a PROCESS not a product.

UDL Guidelines • Multiple Means of Representation • Multiple Means of Expression • Multiple Means of Engagement From UDLCenter.org. which has “checkpoints” for your curriculum.
Multiple Means of Representation • Perceptible to all learners– can see/hear/experience the content • Langue and symbols that clarify content in meaningful ways • Support comprehension of material
Multiple Means of Expression • Options for physical action • Options for expression and fluency • Provide scaffolding of higher level skills (executive functioning)
Multiple Means of Engagement • Provide options for recruiting interest • Provide options for sustaining effort • Provide options for self regulating
What’s next? • What questions do we still have? • What information do we still need?
