Why Join Speech Tournament • Speech Tournament is a lot of fun • You want to be a future actor/actress • You love to be in front of crowd • It looks great on your transcripts • You want to be President one day. • You have participated each year since the 4th grade • Your mom makes you do it. =)

  3. When is Speech Tournament • This year, the Speech Tournament will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at Barrington Middle School Station Campus. • Presentations begin at 8 a.m. • Please read over all rules, especially dress code • You will wear a white dress shirt and black pants • Please look over the judging sheets and see how you will be graded • Know your times: Solo Presentations (4-10 minutes) and Group Events (5-10 minutes)

  4. Changes this Year • The fee is $12 a person • There is no food celebration after the tournament • You will receive a certificate and treat in an envelope after the tournament • Some scripts are no longer allowed • Times have been altered some too

  5. Tuesday, January 8th • Your application, coach’s application and $12 check are due to Mrs. Kandl • If you do not have Mrs. Kandl as a teacher, ask your advisory teacher to place the envelope with all your information in Mrs. Kandl’s mailbox • You can find Mrs. Kandl Per. 1-3 in room 404 and 5th- 7th period: Office room 313 • Of you can turn applications into the front office • If you work with a partner or group, please put everyone’s information in one envelope

How Do I Find a Script?? • If you like to write; create your own script • If not, we have Speeches for you • Go to Station Middle School’s Website Homepage • Log on to School Wires, as if you are checking your grades • Go to Activities and Athletics, click on the heading • Look for Academic Competitions, click on that link • Look for Speech Tournament on the side

  7. Speech Tournament • Speech Tournament tag will be on the right hand side • Look at the choices, when you find Speech Tournament click on it • When you are in the Speech Tournament link, you will then look on the right side • Look for Speech Tournament 2013 Scripts • All scripts will be there

  8. Dual Language Speeches • Yes, there will be dual language speeches • Yes, there will be dual language judges for your performance • The district coordinators are waiting for speeches to be translated right now • Questions please email Mrs. Kubiak pkubiak@barrington220.org

  9. Print Only One • As you look at the scripts, read them online • Only print one copy of the script when you find the script that you like • Use the copy machine at school to make copies for your group and your coach • Any questions make sure to see Mrs. Kandl or email mkandl@barrington220.org

Friday, January 25th • Mrs. Kandl needs to know your final speech selection title. • If your speech is an original piece, Mrs. Kandl has to look it over • I also need to know on this day if you have a sibling at another school that will be participating and… • If you have to have a specific time because of another commitment. (We can not promise that it will be accepted though)

  12. Practice, Practice, Practice • Make sure that you are practicing and are timing yourself to fit in the length of time • Meet with your coach regularly to make sure you are smiling, making eye contact, announciating,etc…

  13. What to Wear?? • White Dress Shirt (no logo) • Dark Black or Navy Pants of Skirt • You can not wear a costume or have any type of props • You can not have colors coming off your clothes • You can not have logos like: Nike or Team Names on your Shirt • You can loose out on points because of clothing • Dress Nice, this is a great day!!

  14. Problems • If any problems arise, please see Mrs. Kandl in Room 404 and we will find a resolution to the issue. • If you have any questions or need time to practice, let Mrs. Kandl know that too. • If you are ill or for some reason drop out of the competition, Mrs. Kandl needs to know that too!

  15. February 22nd • A sheet will be sent to your advisory listing what time you will be presenting • If you do not receive a sheet, please see Mrs. Kandl • There are over 950 kids that take part in the tournament, changes can not be made • On March 2nd, make sure you show up early and are ready to go.
