Chapter 9 • Go into a cave and wait out a storm • Find flooded-out house and body inside – why does Jim not let Huck see the face? • too gruesome, find out truth later • Get supplies and clothes from house River is source of providence – it provides things that Huck needs
Chapter 10 & 11 • Huck plays prank on Jim – what is it? What happened? • A dead rattlesnake in bed • Its mate comes and bites Jim • Huck goes ashore to gather information – what does he pretend to be? • a girl • What does he find out? • People first thought that Jim killed Huck, but now they suspect it was Pap and he left town before he was going to be lynched • There’s a reward for both Pap and Jim and a party is going to go to Jackson’s Island to look for Jim
Chapter 10 & 11 • Does the woman believe that Huck is a girl? • No • What gave Huck away? • Throws like a boy • Messes up name • Needle and thread • Catching lead in lap • After being discovered as a boy, what does Huck do? • Makes up a story about being an apprentice to a mean farmer • How does Mrs. Loftus test this story? • By asking questions about farming.
Chapter 10 & 11 Truth vs. Falsehood • When Huck lies to save people it works. • When Huck lies to hurt people it backfires. • Huck and Jim leave Jackson’s Island on the raft, traveling at night and hiding in the day.
Chapters 12 & 13 • On the raft, Jim and Huck “live pretty high”, they pass up St. Louis • On a stormy night, they pass a wrecked steamboat where there is a gang of robbers. Huck wants to have an “adventure” like Tom. What are the robbers planning on doing? • Two are going to leave one behind to die when the boat breaks up so they can have his share of the money.
Chapters 12 & 13 • What happens to the raft while they are on the steamboat? • It floats away • How do Huck and Jim escape? • They take the robbers’ skiff. • They find their raft. How does Huck feel after leaving the robbers? • Guilty • What does he try to do? • Get a ferry-boatman to rescue them • How does he do it? • Telling a story that his family is trapped on the boat. • What happens? • The steamboat already broke up.
Chapters 12 & 13 Natural life vs. Civilized life • Huck and Jim’s life is peaceful on the raft; they meet greed and selfishness of civilized life on the steamboat New Symbol – the raft vs. the steamboat • Raft represents peaceful life, in harmony with nature • Steamboat is a product of civilized society with its criminal life
Chapter 14 • Huck reads to Jim from books they got from the wreck about kings, etc. • What do they argue about? • King Solomon being wise • The French not speaking English
Chapter 15 • On a foggy night, Huck gets seperated from Jim and the raft. He finds the raft and Jim asleep. Jim is thrilled to see Huck again, but what does Huck do? • He plays a trick on him by saying he was just dreaming. • How does Jim react to the trick? • He is hurt and angry. • What does Huck do? • He goes and apologizes.
