  3. What is the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board? The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) was created by the Texas Legislature in 1965. The purpose of THECB is to provide leadership and coordination for the Texas Higher Education system. The general responsibilities of THECB are to: Assess the overall state of higher education in Texas. Develop recommendations to the Legislature, Governor, and institutions for its enhancement. Establish policies for the efficient and effective use of the state’s higher education resources.

  4. Types of State Aid Programs Grants, Work-Studyand Scholarships Funds do not need to be repaid Educational Loans Funds are used to cover cost of attendance Exemption Programs Exempts from paying tuition and/or fees Waiver Programs Waives non-resident tuition rates for non-resident students .

State Financial Aid Priority Deadline – March 15th • The state priority deadline is required at the General Academic Teaching Institutions (GATI’s). • Community Colleges, Private/Independent and Technical Schools are encouraged, but not required, to advertise and implement a priority deadline. • Institutions have the flexibility to define what it means to meet the deadline. .

TEXAS Grant – Initial Year (IY) Eligibility To receive an IY award through the TEXAS Grant, a student must: • Be classified by the institution as a Texas resident. • Have a 9-month EFC of no more than $5,233. • Be registered with Selective Service, or be exempt. • Have not been convicted of a felony or crime involving a controlled substance. • Be enrolled in at least 9 hours as an entering undergraduate student with no more than 30 hours. • Includesall hours earned that are being accepted by your institution. • Excludescredits for dual enrollment or by examination. • Show financial need.

  9. TEXAS Grant – IY Pathways Priority Model Consideration Four (4) IY Pathways: • Graduated from an accredited public or private high school. • Includes Priority Model. • Earned an Associate’s Degree. • Enlisted in military service. • Texas Educational Opportunity Grant (TEOG) Transfer.

Eligibility Ends when: Student receives a Baccalaureate Degree OR Student attempts 150 Semester Credit Hours (SCHs) Whichever comes first TEXAS Grant Renewal Eligibility End of subsequent years (Program SAP): 2.5 cumulative GPA and 24 completed SCHs End of 1st year: Institution’s SAP Policy Enroll in at least 3/4 time Have Financial Need

TEG – First Year Eligibility To receive a first year award through the TEG Program, a student must: • Be enrolled at least ¾ time. • Be registered with Selective Service, or be exempt. • Be classified as a Texas resident or National Merit Finalist receiving scholarships in the amount eligible to pay Texas resident tuition. • Not concurrently receiving an athletic scholarship. • Attempting their first associate, baccalaureate, masters, or doctoral degree. • Not enrolled in a seminary or other religious program leading to a career in a church.

TEG Subsequent Eligibility Undergraduate Student Eligibility Ends after: 10 consecutive semester from the first award End of subsequent years (Program SAP): 2.5 cumulative GPA and 75% Completion Rate 24 completed SCH’s for Undergraduate 18 completed SCH’s for Graduate End of 1st year: Institution’s SAP Policy Enrolled at least 3/4 time Undergraduate Enrolled at least 1/2 time for Graduate Have Financial Need

TEGAward Amounts • Maximum annual TEG award for 2016-2017 equals the least of the student’s financial need, the student’s tuition differential, or $3,364. • Undergraduate students with exceptional need (defined as students with EFC’s less than or equal to $1,000) may receive up to 150% of the basic award ($3,364 x 150% = $5,046), not to exceed the student’s need or tuition differential. 2016-2017 Maximums

Texas College Work-Study Eligibility requirements: • Be classified by the institution as a Texas resident. • Be registered with Selective Service, or be exempt. • Have not been convicted of a felony or crime involving a controlled substance. • Be enrolled in at least 6 hours. • Show financial need.

  23. Top 10 Percent Scholarship • As of July 2015, the Texas Legislature reduced funding for the Top 10 Percent Scholarship program, limiting it to RYawards only. 2016-2017 Maximums

  25. BOT Loan Amounts 2016-2017 Maximums As of July 2015, the Texas Legislature reduced funding for the BOT program, limiting it to RYawards only. Unless the student previously received an award at an institution of higher education, they are not eligible to receive an award this upcoming year.

  26. CAL Program • The CAL Program provides alternative loans to Texas students who are unable to meet the cost of attendance at public and private/non-profit institutions. • Interest rate of 4.5% fixed. • Eligibility requirements: • Be classified by the institution as a Texas resident. • Be enrolled in at least 9 hours. • Receive a favorable credit evaluation or provide an eligible co-signer who receives a favorable credit evaluation. • Meet the institution’s SAP policy.
