  1. What is wrong with this question? Find as many things as you can (I found 9), and then write a better version. Roughly how many bags of crisps do you eat during an average week? [ ] None [ ] 1 - 3 [ ] 4 - 6 [ ] 7 - 9 [ ] >9 Everybody eats crisps these days. How many crisps have you eaten? [ ] 50 to 100 [ ] 100 to 500 [ ] 600 to 700 Gaps in categories Hard to understand No timescale Leading question Overlapping categories Missing ‘none’ option Uneven categories Missing ‘more than 700’ option Badly chosen answers

  2. No leading questions – don’t try to force a particular answer by asking biased questions. • Answers are understandable – it shouldn’t be hard to choose the answer that applies to you. • Relevant – stick to the topic, and if a question isn’t necessary get rid of it. • Anonymous – you don’t normally need to know names. • Make sense – answers should fit the questions. • Categories don’t overlap – it shouldn’t be possible for one person to tick more than one box. • Categories cover all the options – there should be a box to tick for everyone (you may need an ‘other’). What to look out for in a survey
