What is Service Learning? • Service-learning is a credit-bearing, educational experience in which students: 1) participate in an organized service activity that meets identified on- and off-campus community needs and 2) reflect on the service activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, and an enhanced sense of civic responsibility (Committee Minutes, January 25, 2001). • http://www2.byui.edu/ServiceLearning/subpages/fgdefinition.htm

  3. What are the benefits of Service Learning? • When participating in Service Learning, you are able to give back to your community. It is always a very rewarding experience, and it is wonderful knowing that you are doing your part to help others.

  4. Phi Mu Trash Pick-Up“Adopt-A-Highway” I picked up trash on Patterson Street, Phi Mu’s adopted highway

  5. Phi-Mu “Matches for Miralces” Tennis Tournament I helped raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network by volunteering at Phi Mu’s annual tennis tournament.

  6. VSU Foundation I supported the Valdosta State University Foundation by purchasing a t-shirt. All proceeds went to the VSU Tennis Team.

  7. Valdosta Pediatric Therapy I volunteered at Valdosta Pediatric Therapy. I shadowed the speech therapists there and helped with the kids.

  8. Relay for Life I participated in VSU’s Relay for Life, which raises money for cancer research.

  9. What did I get out of my Service Learning? • After completing my service learning, I feel like I have a better understanding of what it means to help other people. I realize how well off I am, and I want to do more in the future to give back to my community.
