Comprehension Skill Tested –Main Idea and Details • The focus of a paragraph or an article - what the article is about – is the topic. • The most important thing about this topic is called the main idea. • Small pieces of information that tell more about the main idea are supporting details.
Comprehension Strategy - Summarizing • A summary is a short statement that tells the main ideas of a selection. • A story summary should tell the goals of the characters, how they try to reach them, and whether they reach them. • A summary of an article should tell the main idea, leaving out unnecessary details. Comprehension Skill: Generalizing • Sometimes as you read, you are given ideas about several things or people. • When you make a statement about all of them together, you are making a generalization. • A generalization is a broad statement that applies to many examples.
Comprehension Skill: Generalizing • Words such as all, none, most, many, always, never, and generally are clues that can signal a generalization. • A valid generalization is accurate. • A valid generalization is supported by facts. • A faulty generalization is not accurate.
