  1. Effects of Hallucinogens and Amphetamines on the Brain Hallucinogens are drugs that effect perception, emotion, and mental processes. LSD, PCP, Ecstasy, and marijuana are all hallucinogens. Amphetamines are drugs that stimulate the central nervous system. They increase the synaptic activity of the dopamine and norepinephrine neurotransmitter systems. Some examples of amphetamines are cocaine, Ritalin, and caffeine.

  2. Dopamine Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that affects brain processes that control movement, emotions and experiencing pleasure and pain.

  3. Norepinephrine Norepinephrine is a neurotransmitter that is released from the sympathetic neurons that affects the heart. Increased levels of norepinephrine results in the increase of heart rate.

  4. Anandamide Anandamide is a neurotransmitter that belongs to a group of chemicals called cannabinoids.

  5. Marijuana Marijuana shows characteristics of all the categories of drugs, but it best fits into the category of hallucinogens. Marijuana contains a chemical called THC. THC effects areas of the brain with a high level of cannabinoid receptors. Areas of the brain that have a high level of cannabinoid receptors are the Hippocampus, the Cerebellum, and the Basal Ganglia. These effect and influence pleasure, memory, thinking, concentration, sensory and time perception, and coordinated movement.

  6. How LSD Works LSD works similarly to the serotonin neurotransmitter, which deals with senses, mood, appetite, muscle control and sleep. These neurotransmitters are found in your cerebral cortex and your locus ceruleus(in the pons). It also changes the way your eyes process information and sends it to your brain, causing you to hallucinate. The hallucinations, or “trips” last about 8-12 hours. During that time, you see and feel things that aren't there. It distorts senses, causing you to smell colours and see sounds. LSD can also cause permanent brain damage.

  7. Cocaine and Your Dopamine Cocaine is a amphetamine and a hallucinogen that stops the normal recycling and increases the amount of dopamine. It makes you feel great and confident, and full of energy, because the overdose of dopamine in your brain. It can also cause hallucinations and other side effects. This can permanently damage your dopamine, and can cause lethal heart attacks, and other heart issues.

  8. Crystal Meth Crystal Meth, or “Meth”, causes your brain to greatly increase the amount of dopamine in your brain, and cause similar effects as cocaine, but stronger. It kills blood cells in your brain, which could result in a stroke, and death, and damages all your organs. It can cause hallucinations, delusions, and paranoia.
