The project led by VIOKERAL focuses on integrating various organic wastes into clay ceramics production, aiming to enhance sustainability and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Established in 1920, VIOKERAL produces 550,000 tons of ceramic materials annually. By mixing clay with olive oil mill waste and other biomass, energy demands can be reduced by up to 60% and water usage by 30%. The initiative promotes collaboration with research institutions and industries, contributing to resource efficiency and pollution minimization while aligning with EU environmental standards.

SPIRE Brokerage event December 16th 2013 SUSTAINABLE PROCESSINDUSTRY EUROPEAN INDUSTRIAL COMPETTIVENESS TROUGH Resource and energy efficiency Incorporation of a variety of organic wastes into clay ceramics production for the GHG Emission Reduction.
Organization www.viokeral.com • VIOKERAL , is one of the most important clay building materials producers in Greece and neighbouring Balkan countries (Bulgaria and Albania) .
Established in 1920 as family owned company, created through the decades a great reputation for innovation, progressive development that both finally ensure reliable quality products, such as: hollow and perforated bricks, roof tilles, and celler system. • 550.000 tn of ceramic building materials are produced annualy at six different owned plants fullfilling quality standards and aesthetic design. • By the participation to the EU – ETS, VIOKERAL organised R&D&I department , in order to achieve the KYOTO target and creates CARBON OFFSETS .Thus , in the production process , valorise waste or by-products into raw materials
Project Idea Concept 1. Production of ceramic products by mixing clay materials with : • Olive Stone Wooden Residue • Alperujo (two phase olive oil mills waste) • Olive Oil Mill Waste Waters (OMWW) • Other biomass waste (agricultural, food industry) • Oil drillingand processing 2. Reduction of energy demands (up to 60%) 3. Reduction of water demand (up to 30% for Alperujo and OMWW) 4. Increase resource efficiency through kilns, boilers , heat exchangers and automation systems. 5. Involve cross - sectorial corporations, machinery constructors and research institutes to the reduction of GHG emissions and resource efficiency. Major Advantages : a) Holistic approach for resource management b)Substantial reduction in energy demands and CO2 emissions.
