The Preparation Outline • A detailed outline used to plan a speech • Guidelines: • Include the specific purpose statement & central idea • Label the introduction, body, and conclusion • Have a consistent pattern of symbolization & indentation • State main points and subpoints in full sentences • Label transitions, internal summaries, & internal previews • Include a bibliography • A title is recommended, but not required

The Speaking Outline • A brief outline used to deliver a speech • The primary purpose is to help the speaker remember what to say • It includes key words/phrases • It includes essential statistics & quotations • It includes cues to direct and sharpen the speaker’s delivery • Is used for extemporaneous speeches

  3. Guidelines for Speaking Outlines • Follow the same visual framework used in the preparation outline • Make it plainly legible • (it must be readable at a distance) • Make it as brief as possible • Include cues for delivering the speech • (e.g., ‘slow down’, ‘pause’, ‘louder’)
