Meet Florida Sea Turtles • Loggerhead • Leatherback • Hawksbill • Green • Kemp’s Ridley
Meet Florida Sea Turtles:Loggerhead Sea Turtle • Most common • 3’ long, 275 pounds • Brown on top, yellow under • Distance swimmers • Eats clams and crabs
Meet Florida Sea Turtles:Leatherback Sea Turtle • Unique leather shell • 6’ long, up to 1500 pounds • Black with white/blue spots • Deeper, colder water • Eats jelly fish
Meet Florida Sea Turtles:Hawksbill Sea Turtle • Beaked nose • 2’ long, 150 pounds • Multi-color shell and yellow under • Stay close to southern beaches • Eats sea sponges
Meet Florida Sea Turtles:Green Sea Turtle • Very green • 3.5’ long, 350 pounds • Shades of green, some yellow • Stay close to reefs • Eats sea grass and algae
Meet Florida Sea Turtles:Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtle • Endangered and hard to find • 2.5’ long, 90 pounds • Shades of green, • Gulf side of Florida • Eats mostly crabs
Life of a Sea Turtle • Nesting from June-September • Eggs for 45 – 70 days • Length also depends on the weather
Life of a Sea Turtle • Not all will make it to the ocean • Birds, crabs and things on the beach make it hard • Bright lights at night can confuse them.
Life of a Sea Turtle • They grow-up in the ocean • Will separate from other hatchlings • Watch for sharks and other danger • Some swim long distances
Life of a Sea Turtle • It may be 7-50 years before return to shore • Most return to where they were born • New nests, new eggs • Do not stay long before leaving again
