  2. Graduate Study in Economics MA and PhD degrees in economics are research degrees. The level and intensity are far greater than a typical undergrad program. We as a faculty expect our students to work hard, be self motivated, and behave professionally.

  3. We will talk in November about Spring 2011 registration.

  5. MA Electives Must choose two from same topical area. Typical Areas (others with approval): Finance Transportation Logistics Marketing Accounting Math or Stats Political Science Public Policy Agricultural Economics Education Reform Environmental Science MA students can take 4000 level courses.

  6. Non - Course Requirements (MA and PhD) First Year Paper (MA and PhD): Students are expected to complete a survey paper reviewing an area in the literature. Journals can be accessed electronically through the UA library. EconLit, JSTOR, and SSRN are useful online resources that index economics papers. We also have some recent journals in 426 WCOB. Suggested papers list and a current research papers list.

  7. Non - Course Requirements (MA and PhD) Departmental Seminar (MA and PhD): Internal and external speakers present their research. Typically on Friday afternoons. http://www.waltoncollege.uark.edu/econ/1315.asp.

  8. Non - Course Requirements (MA and PhD) Candidacy Exams or Comps: Written exams in micro and macro. Students have two attempts at each exam. The first attempt will be in July of 2011. The second attempt will be in January 2012. MA - must earn a grade of Marginal Pass on both exams PhD – must earn at least a Marginal Pass on both and a Pass on at least one.

  9. Non - Course Requirements (PhD) Field Exam: Students must pass an exam in either Industrial Organization or International Macro. The exam is normally in the form of a paper. (summer of 2nd year) Proposal Defense (PhD): Students must successfully defend a proposed dissertation. This is typically done after course work is completed and students have developed a detailed dissertation plan. (fall of 3rd year)**continual enrollment after passing.

  10. Non - Course Requirements (PhD) Dissertation Credit: Students must complete 18 hours of dissertation credits. (years 3 and 4) Dissertation Defense or Final Examination (PhD): A public oral defense of the dissertation. (spring of 4th year) Doctoral committees consist of a major advisorand at least two additional faculty members.

  11. Assistantships: MA students work 15 hours per week and PhD students work 20 hours per week. Work typically involves some combination of teaching and research assistance. It is a job and students are expected to treat it as such! Funding will be pulled for unacceptable performance. Other

  12. Assistantships: Funded PhD students will teach their own classes starting in the second year of the program (10 hours of assignment). To prepare for this, PhD students are required to 1) take WCOB 6111 this fall and 2) be involved with the supplemental instruction program next spring. PhD Students are assigned a teaching mentor.   13. Assistantships: Funded PhD students are required to take 3 credit hours during the summer. After the first year students take Econ 643V. After the second year students take independent study with their advisor. Starting in the third year PhD students take Dissertation Credit every semester including summer. Other

Happy Hour: Periodically, we have a department happy hour. First one of the year is today at 4:00 at Kingfisher just off Dickson (or meet at my office in 425 WCOB at 3:45). Come meet some other faculty and get to know your new classmates better.
