  7. Spring of the 2nd Year • Required Clinical Rotations • 1 full calendar year – surgery, internal med, family medicine, pediatrics, OB-GYN, neurology, psychiatry; one week of ophthalmology, orthopedic surgery, otolaryngology • Time Span- January of the 2nd year until January of the 3rd year

  8. Third Year • USMLE Step 1 • Step 1 taken after a full year of required clerkships • Step 1 tests your knowledge of the basic sciences with clinical applications • Step 1 is VERY IMPORTANT for your medical license to practice • Penn Med students do exceptionally well on this exam!

  9. Third Year Continued • Take advanced electives • Figure out what you want to be when you grow up • Not crunched for time before you apply to residency programs in your 4th year • Engage in research • Take vacation

  10. 4th Year • Greatest Year Ever • Apply to residency programs • Do your 3 months of a “Scholarly Pursuit” • Take USMLE, Step 2 • Take vacation • Match!
