IamproudtohostKravMagastudents, instructorsanddirectorsfromover15 countrieswhochosetoattendthisspecial eventandpayrespectstothememoryofa greatman. Itisbothappropriateandsymbolicthatthis month,aswecelebrateImi’s100thbirthday, wealsoenteraneweraforKravMaga. WearenowmakinganotherleapinKrav Maga,usingtheknowledgewehave developedduringmanyyearsofexperience, includingrecentexclusiveadvancements. IMI,FOUNDEROFKRAVMAGA “Imi”(Imrich)Sde-Or(formerly:Lichtenfeld), founderofKravMaga,wasbornin1910in Budapest,whichatthetimewasoneofthecenters oftheAustro-HungarianEmpire.Hegrewupin Bratislava,thecapitalofSlovakia,inahomewhere sports,law, andCentralEuropeaneducationwere equallyrespected. SamuelLichtenfeld,Imi’sfather,wasundoubtedly quiteauniquefigure.Atage13hejoinedatraveling circus,andforthenext20yearsengaged in wrestling,weightlifting,andvariousdemonstrations ofstrength.Forhimthecircuswasalsoaschool, wherehemetpeopleinvolvedinawidevarietyof sports,includingsomequite unusualones.These peopletaughtSamuelwhattheyknew-including variousfightingandself-defensetechniques. “Thegoalof selfdefense –don’tget hit” Afterleavingthecircus,SamuelLichtenfeldmoved to Bratislava(thenknownasPresburg)and establishedthecity’sfirst clubforheavyathletics, named“Hercules.”Helaterjoinedthemunicipal policedepartment,whereherosetothepositionof DetectiveInCharge.Duringhisyearsofservicein thispost,Samuelgainedareputationastheofficer whoapprehendedandbroughttotrialthehighest numberofmurderersandviolentcriminals. Duringtheensuingdecade,Imi’sathleticactivities focusedmainlyonwrestling,bothasacontestant andatrainer.YearafteryearhewontheSlovakian championshipforhisweightgroupandwasone ofthemainstaysofthenationalteam.Upuntil 1939,Imiparticipatedinnumerousinternational meets,winningdozensofmedalsandprizes.Imi wasconsideredtobeattheforefrontofEuropean wrestlers.He wonvictoriesovermanychampions andtitle-holdersinhisown andothercountries. Imi’ssportsactivities alsoincludedacrobatics, andfromthereheevenproceededtodramatic arts.Hetaughtgymnasticstothecastofoneof Czechoslovakia’sbest-knowntheatricalcompanies, andactedsuccessfullyinseveralofthetroupe’s productions.
