This Best Practice Approach Report explores strategies for strengthening the workforce in state oral health programs to improve oral health outcomes. It highlights the core public health functions and essential public health services needed to promote optimal oral health. The report also provides examples of states that are already enhancing their workforce capacity in oral health programs.

The ASTDD vision is to have a strong and effective governmental oral health presence in states and territories to assure optimal oral health. Oral health and public health infrastructure enables state and local public health agencies to perform their core functions and essential services. Professionals from many disciplines are needed to deliver all of the skill sets and workforce hours necessary to provide these services and functions to promote oral health.
