Background Profile Survey Budget Cuts Survey • Funded by CDC • and RWJF • 100% response rate among states and DC • Surveys revised to improve clarity of questions and breadth of data collected • Fielded three times in FY09, twice in FY10, and once in FY11 • Shorter, more targeted survey about budget cuts, workforce, and program reductions • Fielded in 2007 and 2010 • Longer survey about general structure and functions of state health agencies • Only regular enumeration survey of state public health workforce

  3. Key Findings • Over 100,000 FTEs • Over 60% of state health agencies use the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals • State health officials have significant public health experience before taking office • Over 12,400 vacancies; average of 288 per state • Growing number of employees eligible for retirement • Budget cuts have resulted in workforce reductions and program cuts
