Purpose of Workshops • To update delegates on the progress towards the launch of the Public Health Workforce Strategy document in November 2011 • To provide delegates with information about the current content of the Public Health Workforce Strategy document • To provide delegates with an opportunity to feed in ideas, information and viewpoints in to the consultation document supporting the Public Health Workforce Strategy development

Public HealthWorkforce Strategy • White Paper Healthy Lives Healthy People commitment to develop a PH workforce strategy for consultation in autumn 2011 • Working Group includes members from the FPH, BMA, LGA, DCLG, RCN, the Deaneries, HPA as well as officials from DH. • Outline Strategy to agreed with DH Ministers before recess and detailed drafting over the summer. • Plan to publish for consultation later this year • Key co-dependency: Liberating the NHS: Developing the NHS Workforce

Outline Strategy structure • Chpt 1 : Purpose of the Strategy • to provide a supply of highly qualified, motivated staff that will be employed in a range of settings including LAs, the NHS, PHE • To provide opportunities to develop and embed public health into the wider workforce from practitioners to wider workforce eg housing officers. • Chpt 2: Where are we now? • Who are they and where are they located? • What else do we need to know about the PH workforces? Where do we get that information?

Outline Structure (continued) Chpt 3: Workforce challenges and opportunities • Implications of the Marmot Review, Healthy Lives, Healthy People • International literature on public health workforces • Values of the public health workforces • Challenges and opportunities, including challenges of transition • Chpt 4: Getting it right for the public health workforce • Leadership • Specialist roles eg analysts, academics, scientists • Education and training including CPD, • Role of NIHR School of Public Health Research • local NHS training and education partnerships, health and well being boards • Role of PHE and DH in workforce planning, relationship with HEE

  7. Workshop Questions Morning Which professional groupings would you include in a definition of “the public health workforce”? What are the key strengths of the existing arrangements in educating, planning and sourcing the specialist and practitioner public health workforce?

  8. Workshop QuestionsAfternoon What arrangements will best attract and support a vibrant public health workforce? What challenges will the workforce experience in the transition to the new public health system? How can current workforces that deliver public health functions be supported through this transition?
