  1. The Regional Public Health Strategy Investment for Health Professor Lindsey Davies Regional Director of Public Health for the East Midlands

Purpose • Provide a reference point on the most important public health issues for the East Midlands • Provide a public health agenda for the Integrated Regional Strategy • Develop a shared vision of public health priorities with regional organisations based on an ‘investment for health’ philosophy • Identify a specific number of public health priorities which will provide a health dividend at a regional level and add value to local partnerships • Offer a regional Public Health Action Plan to improve health and reduce health inequalities.

  3. The vision “People living and working in the East Midlands should be able to enjoy the highest attainable standard of health as one of the fundamental rights of every human being.”

  4. Primary principle underpinning the strategy “Actions to improve health and reduce health inequalities must focus first on the health of those populations and communities whose social, economic and health needs are the greatest.”

  5. Overall objective • addressing the social, economic and environmental determinants of health, • supporting healthy lifestyles, • protecting health, • improving access to and provision of local health and health-related services.” “The ‘Investment for Health’ strategy aims to improve the health of East Midlands residents by reducing health inequalities year-on-year through:

  7. Theme 1: Addressing the determinants of health • Objective 1:Ensure that the agenda of ‘Investment for Health’ is integrated within the East Midlands Integrated Regional Strategy. • Lead: Regional Assembly Public Health Task Group

  8. Theme 1: Addressing the determinants of health • Objective 2 (Priority):Increase access to organised and accredited health promotion programmes through pre-school, school and college education. • Lead: Healthy School Standard Team (East Midlands)

  9. Theme 2: Supportinghealthy lifestyles • Objective 3:Promote the self-esteem, and the mental, spiritual and social well-being of East Midlands residents. • Lead: Culture East Midlands

  10. Theme 2: Supportinghealthy lifestyles • Objective 4 (Priority):Increase the physical activity levels of East Midlands’ residents. • Lead: East Midlands Sport

  11. Theme 2: Supportinghealthy lifestyles • Objective 5 (Priority):Improve the diet of families and individuals. • Lead: GO-EM (Public Health Group & 5-a-day Team)

  12. Theme 2: Supportinghealthy lifestyles • Objective 6:Reduce the prevalence of smoking, drug misuse and excessive alcohol consumption. • Lead: GO-EM (Government Office for the East Midlands)

  13. Theme 2: Supportinghealthy lifestyles • Objective 7:Improve the level of sexual health. • Lead: GO-EM (Public Health Group & Teenage Pregnancy Unit) with the support of the Health Protection Unit, Northampton PCT.

  14. Theme 3: Protecting health • Objective 8 (Priority):Reduce the incidence of accidental death and injury. • Lead: Regional Assembly, Community Safety Task Group

  15. Theme 3: Protecting health • Objective 9:Protect and promote the health of East Midlands’ employees within their place of work. • Lead: TUC East Midlands

  16. Theme 3: Protecting health • Objective 10:Reduce the incidence of food poisoning. • Lead: East Midlands Health Protection Advisory Committee

  17. Theme 3: Protecting health • Objective 11:Increase and maintain high levels of specific vaccinations. • Lead: Health Protection Agency (East Midlands)

  18. Theme 3: Protecting health • Objective 12:Ensure the effective response by the NHS to major incidents and emergencies in partnership with other regional organisations. • Lead: Government Office for the East Midlands

  19. Theme 4: Health service provision • Objective 13 (Priority):Improve access to primary and secondary care services. • Lead: GO-EM (Department of Health)

  20. Theme 4: Health service provision • Objective 14:Reduce the incidence and improve the outcomes of cancers. • Lead: Trent Cancer Networks and the Leics., Northants & Rutland Cancer Network

  21. Theme 4: Health service provision • Objective 15:Reduce the incidence and improve the outcomes of coronary heart disease and stroke. • Lead: East Midlands CHD Network

  22. Theme 4: Health service provision • Objective 16:Reduce the incidence and improve the outcomes of mental illness. • Lead: East Midlands Mental Health Regional Development Centre

  23. Monitoring and evaluation of the strategy • Progress towards the overall objective will be measured by monitoring set of key health inequality indicators which reflect national targets • Progress on the 16 individual objectives will be evaluated using set of indicators drawn from the East Midlands Health Profile 2003 • East Midlands Public Health Observatory will play a crucial role
