  1. Ch 10: The Mole

  2. Mole: a counting unit in chemistry 6.02 x 1023 (atoms, molecules, formula units, paper clips, donuts, people, anything!) 602,000,000,000,000,000,000,000

  3. Analogies: A pair means 2 A dozen means 12 A gross means 144 A score means 20 ***a mole is just a word to represent a really large number Why do we use a mole?? We need a very large number of atoms or molecules to measure because atoms and molecules are so small.

  4. A mole of

  5. a mole of cans of soda roughly equals the volume of the moon A mole of hockey pucks would be equal to the mass of the Moon.

  6. One mole of rice grains is more grains than all the grain that has been grown since the beginning of time.

  7. Challenge • Can you find out what a mole of something is equal or roughly equal? • Bonus worth a mole of high fives

  8. Converting Particles to Moles • If we have 2.8 x 1024 atoms of silicon, how many moles of Si atoms do we have? • (we know 1 mole of Si atoms= 6.02x1023 Si atoms) • **Remember conversion factors?? • 1 mole or 6.02x1023 particles • 6.02x1023 particles 1 mole • 2.8x1024 atoms of Si x 1 mole • 6.02x1023 atoms •  = 4.7 moles of Si atoms

  9. 2. If we have 4.3x1022 molecules of H2O, how many moles of H2O do we have? 4.3x1022 molecules of H2O x 1 mole ofH2O 6.02x1023molecules ofH2O = .071 moles of H2O

  10. Converting Moles to Particles • How many molecules of SO3 in 1.6 moles? • How many molecules of N2O in 7.9 moles? • How many atoms of nitrogen in 7.9 moles of N2O?

  11. Atomic Mass: the average mass of an atom • (Use the Periodic Table!) • What is the atomic mass of a nitrogen atom? • What is the atomic mass of a vanadium atom?

  12. Formula Mass: mass of 1 molecule (covalent) or formula unit (ionic) of a substance. (unit = amu) • What is the formula mass of a water molecule? • What is the formula mass of NaCl?

  13. Molar Mass: the mass of 1 mole of a substance (unit = g) • What is the molar mass of carbon? • What is the molar mass of vanadium?

  14. 3. What is the molar mass of H2O? 4. What is the mass of 1 mole of CH4?

  15. Measuring a Mole Lab Go to the lab and measure out 1 mole of a substance and put it in a ziplock bag. Label with your name, substance and the mass in grams.

  16. Mole/Mass Conversions • 1. .650 mol of P2O5 = __________ g of P2O5 2. 100.0 g of NaNO3 = _________ mol of NaNO3

  17. 3. 29.0 g C = __________ mol C • 4. How many moles are in 18.0 g of gold? • How many grams are in 2.0 moles of C12H22O11?
