  2. INTRODUCTION Mars is the fourth planet from the sun in the solar system. It is also called the “Red Planet” because of its reddish color. Mars was named after the Roman God of War, Mars. It has volcanoes, valleys, deserts, and polar ice caps similar to Earth. The United States, the Soviet Union, Europe, and Japan have sent many spacecraft to Mars to study the its surface, climate, and geology.

INTERESTING FACTS • Mars orbits around the sun in almost two Earth years which is 687 Earth days. • The average distance of Mars from the Sun is 141,633,260 miles. • Mars has two moons named Phobos and Deimos • The diameter of Mars is 4,220 miles • Mars has a low surface temperature of -207 degreesFahrenheit, and a high surface temperature of 81 degrees Fahrenheit.
