  1. THE ELBOW:Muscles

  2. Biceps brachii Brachialis Brachioradialis Pronator teres Pronator quadratus Supinator Triceps Anconeus MUSCLES

  3. Biceps Brachii • Origin • Short = Coracoid process • Long = Lip of glenoid fossa • Insertion • Radial tuberosity • Actions • Flexion of elbow • Supination of forearm • [Weak flexion of shoulder] • Stronger with forearm supinated e.g. pull-ups

  4. Brachialis • Origin • Distal half of anterior surface of humerus • Insertion • Coronoid process • Actions • Flexion of elbow • Pure elbow flexor • Isolated somewhat with the forearm pronated

  5. Brachioradialis Anterior to elbow joint • Origin • Lateral ridge of distal humerus • Insertion • Lateral surface of distal radius near the styloid process • Actions • Flexion of elbow • Supination of forearm • Pronation of forearm • Most effective as a flexor with forearm in neutral forearm position

  6. Pronator Teres • Origin • Medial epicondyle of humerus; Coronoid process of ulna • Insertion • Lateral surface of mid-shaft of radius • Actions • Pronation • [Weak flexion]

  7. Pronator Quadratus • Origin • Distal, anterior end of ulna • Insertion • Distal, anterior end of radius • Actions • Pronation • Removing a screw with the right hand

  8. Supinator • Origin • Lateral epicondyle, Posterior-lateral surface of ulna • Insertion • Proximal, lateral surface of the radius • Actions • Supination • Inserting a screw with right hand

  9. Triceps Brachii • Origin • Long = Lip of glenoid fossa • Lateral = Proximal, posterior surface of humerus • Medial = Distal ⅔ of posterior surface or humerus • Insertion • Olecranon process of ulna • Actions • Extension of elbow • [Long head extension of shoulder and adduction of the shoulder.]

  10. Triceps Brachii • Pushing movements • Push-ups • Bench press • Dips • Overhead press • Throwing motions

  11. Anconeus • Origin • Lateral epicondyle • Insertion • Lateral side of olecranon process • Actions • Extension of elbow
