  2. Genesis 4:2-7 (NKJV) 2 . . . Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. 3 And in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the Lord. 4 Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the Lord respected Abel and his offering, W. 65th St church of Christ / January 7, 2007

  3. Genesis 4:2-7 (NKJV) 5 but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell. 6 So the Lord said to Cain, "Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? 7 If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it." W. 65th St church of Christ / January 7, 2007

  4. Why did God reject Cain’s offering? Hebrews 11:4; Romans 10:17; Hebrews 12:24 • Cain disobeyed & would not repent! Gen 4:8; 1 John 3:12; Jude 1:11 W. 65th St church of Christ / January 7, 2007

  5. Genesis 19:17-26 (NKJV) 17 So it came to pass, when they had brought them outside, that he said, "Escape for your life! Do not look behind you nor stay anywhere in the plain. Escape to the mountains, lest you be destroyed.“ . . . 25 So He overthrew those cities, all the plain, all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground. 26 But his wife looked back behind him, and she became a pillar of salt. 6. They were hesitant to leave – Gen 19:16 • Lot and Mrs. Lot had daughters still in Sodom - Gen 19:8,12-15 • Lot’s wife perished because her heart was still in Sodom! – Prov 14:14 • Mrs. Lot is an example for us - Luke 17:28-33 W. 65th St church of Christ / January 7, 2007

  7. Hebrews 10:36-39 (NKJV) 36 For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise: 37 "For yet a little while,And He who is coming will come and will not tarry.38 Now the just shall live by faith; But if anyone draws back,My soul has no pleasure in him."39 But we are not of those who draw back to perdition, but of those who believe to the saving of the soul. W. 65th St church of Christ / January 7, 2007

  8. John 17:12 (NKJV) 12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; and none of them is lost except the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. W. 65th St church of Christ / January 7, 2007

  9. One given to Christ by the Father – (John 17:12) • Had the Holy Spirit and worked miracles – (Mat 10:1-4) • How could he have fallen? • He was a thief (John 12:6). • He was greedy (Matthew 26:14,15; Acts 1:18). • He repented not (Matthew 27:3-5; 2 Corinthians 7:10). W. 65th St church of Christ / January 7, 2007

  10. Mark 12:38-40 (NKJV) 38 Then He said to them in His teaching, "Beware of the scribes, who desire to go around in long robes, love greetings in the marketplaces, 39 the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts, 40 who devour widows' houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation." W. 65th St church of Christ / January 7, 2007

  11. They were among the religious leaders of the day – (Matthew 23:1-3) • They prayed to be seen of men - (Matthew 6:5). • It was cover for their hypocrisy - (Matthew 23:3,14). • It was self-righteous (Luke 18:9,10). • It was w/o mercy (Mark 12:40). • The Scribe was lost because his religion was all show and no substance. W. 65th St church of Christ / January 7, 2007

  12. Acts 10:1-6 (NKJV) 1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 2 a devout man and one who feared God with all his household, who gave alms generously to the people, and prayed to God always. . . . 5 . . . send for . . . Peter. 6. . . He will tell you what you must do." W. 65th St church of Christ / January 7, 2007

  13. What did Cornelius know?? (10:37) • He feared and worshipped God! (10:2) • The word that God sent to the children of Israel! (10:36,37,42) • That peace through Jesus Christ was preached! (10:36,37,43; [Phillip, Acts 8:40]) • That Jesus was Lord of ALL! (10:36,37,43) • The works of Jesus! (10:38,39,40) W. 65th St church of Christ / January 7, 2007

  14. What did Cornelius NOT know?? • God had “granted repentance to life” to the Gentiles as well as the Jews – (11:18) • The words God had commanded Peter to speak to them, i.e. that which they MUST do! – (10:33, [6,22,32,42; 11:14]) • That they too must be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ! (10:47,48; 11:17; cf. 2:38) W. 65th St church of Christ / January 7, 2007

  15. Romans 10:1-3 (NKJV) 1 Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved. 2 For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. 3 For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God. W. 65th St church of Christ / January 7, 2007

  16. Why were they lost? • They were ignorant. • They were self-righteous. • They were rebellious. • They were faithless (v.6) • Israel was lost because they sought salvation on their own terms rather than God’s - (By the Law of Moses and NOT by grace through an obedient faith in Christ). W. 65th St church of Christ / January 7, 2007

  17. Acts 24:24-26 (NKJV) 24 And after some days, when Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was Jewish, he sent for Paul and heard him concerning the faith in Christ. 25 Now as he reasoned about righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid and answered, "Go away for now; when I have a convenient time I will call for you.” . . . W. 65th St church of Christ / January 7, 2007

  18. Felix heard Paul preach about “the faith in Christ” - which included - righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to come – (Vs. 24,25) • Felix was afraid – Why?? He knew he stood condemned!! (25) • He delayed - Why? Christianity requires righteous conduct and he was not yet ready to live for Christ! (v. 25), • Not saved by Good intentions! - (26-27) W. 65th St church of Christ / January 7, 2007

  19. Acts 26:27-29 (NKJV) 27 King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know that you do believe." 28 Then Agrippa said to Paul, "You almost persuade me to become a Christian." 29 And Paul said, "I would to God that not only you, but also all who hear me today, might become both almost and altogether such as I am, except for these chains." W. 65th St church of Christ / January 7, 2007

  20. Why was Agrippa lost?? • Politics (v. 21) • Peer pressure (v. 24) • Unbelief (v. 23, cf. 8, 27) • Sin (v. 20, cf. 25:13) • Agrippa was lost because he was unwilling to be persuaded by the Gospel alone (Acts 26:29). W. 65th St church of Christ / January 7, 2007

  21. W. 65th St church of Christ / January 7, 2007

  22. Believe! (John 8:24) Obey! (Acts 2:38) Serve! (Romans 6:16-18) W. 65th St church of Christ / January 7, 2007
