  2. Beginning of Queen Victoria’s Life • Queen Victoria was born May 24,1819 at Kensington Palace in London. • Queen Victoria was an only child. • Queen Victoria’s father died shortly after her birth. • At 18 years of age she became queen on June 20,1837.

  3. Queen Victoria in Throne • Queen Victoria became queen in 1837. • Her coronation wasn’t until 1838. • When she became queen one of her first prime ministers said “Aren’t you a little to short to be queen.” • Queen Victoria was in reign longer than any other British monarch .

  4. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert • Queen Victoria proposed to Prince Albert at Windsor castle. • They got married in 1840. • This marriage was arranged. • Queen Victoria and Prince Albert had 9 children.

  5. Life Away From Being Queen • Queen Victoria and Prince Albert made their children live in a house away from the palace with a nanny. • Queen Victoria didn’t like children. • She almost married Lord Melbourne before she met Prince Albert.

  6. After Prince Albert’s Death • Prince Albert died of typhoid fever. • Queen Victoria was deeply attached to her husband. • Queen Victoria was in morning for the rest of her life. • 37 years after Prince Albert’s death Queen Victoria received the diamond of Jubilee.

  7. Became Queen • She took over the throne after her uncle died June 20, 1837. • She became queen at 18 years old on June 20, 1837. • Her coronation as queen wasn’t until June 28, 1838.

  8. Major Events • 1840 Penny Post was introduced. • 1845-1848 Potato Famine in Ireland killed over a million people. • 1846 Her Husband brought the Christmas Tree from Germany to England. • 1861Her husband died.

  9. Major Events • 1887 Victoria celebrated her Golden Jubilee. • 1897 She celebrated her Diamond Jubilee. • 1901 She passed away.

  10. World Events • May 1, 1876 Victoria was the first Empress of India. • 1842-1882 She was nearly killed. • 1837 Andrew Jackson was president in the United States. • 1864 Thanksgiving was a annual holiday.

  11. Wars & Conflicts • 1839-1842 Britain fought in the Opium War. • 1853-1856 Crimean War Great Britain and France against Russia. • 1861 The first shot was fired on Fort Sumter started the American Civil War. • 1899-1902 Boer War was fought.

  12. Queen Victoria’s Ruling • Queen Victoria was not a very respected person before she became queen. • She ruled for 63 years from 1837-1901. • Her ruling authorities were so complete that she didn’t need legal authority.

  13. Problems • She had problems with the Industrial Revolution with pollution in her river and sewage. • Before she was queen the British government was figure headed. • The Victorian conception allowed for little compassion and the poor were very inferior.

  14. Death of Prince Albert and Queen Victoria • Prince Albert Queen Victoria’s husband died in 1861. • Queen Victoria died of bleeding in the brain in 1901.

  15. Queen Victoria’s Legacy • She had a Diamond Jubilee for the 60th year of her reign. On June 22nd 1897. • She became queen after the death of her uncle at the age of 18. • The lions share all came part of her global power.

  18. Victoria's Contribution to Politics • When she was eighteen she ruled her own stead, instead of her mothers. • 71 years Queen Victoria stayed on her throne, then Britain became the most powerful country ever. • Britain ruled one fifth of the worlds surface and one quarter of the people.

  25. Contributions to Literature • After Queen Victoria died music continued to play a large part in English life. • Good literature from any age is judged by it’s power and it’s beauty of it’s language. • Poetry was the most popular literary form both in England and America.

Reign Comes to an End • Queen Victoria died from a blood clot in her brain in 1901. • She was queen from June 20, 1837 - January 22, 1901 63 years,7 months, and 2 days. • Canada passed a law allowing after Queen Victoria died declaring for every year on May 24 was Victoria Day unless it was on a Sunday it would be celebrated on the May 25.

  27. Queen Victoria’s Death • Forty years after Prince Albert’s death Queen Victoria passed away. • Queen Victoria died of bleeding from the brain. • She died in rule of 63 years.
