  2. What is a Benchmark ? • What are they? Benchmark: a mark on a stone post or other permanent feature, at a point whose exact elevation and position is known: used as a reference point in surveying. • What are your Corps Benchmarks 3. How were they developed and/or set?

  4. How to Develop Benchmarks • 1. Plan-Requires you to strategically plan for what your program will provide participants. Demands you evaluate your program components and ask how well your program delivers on those items (Tracking). Those items you provide and can track become your benchmarks. Streamline delivery of services. Big picture. • Think about it: Make a quick list. What does your program provide to it’s participants?

  5. How to Develop Benchmarks • 2. Teach-Requires you to explicitly teach all those at your agency about the benchmarks and how to support participant success. All stakeholders are on the bus going the same direction. We all speak the same language of success. Consistency. • Also requires you provide the instruction and support participants need to progress towards and achieve benchmarks. • Reflect: How do you get everyone on the bus at your agency?

  6. How to Develop Benchmarks • 3. Assess-Requires you evaluate how well participants are meeting your benchmarks. Are we accurately tracking benchmark achievement? Are we able to track and demonstrate participant progress towards achieving benchmarks? What are we missing? • Let’s re-visit our list. Review what you’ve written and circle the ones you can prove with evidence, list the evidence you would use to demonstrate achievement towards benchmarks.

  7. How to Develop Benchmarks • 4. Reflect-How are we doing as an agency meeting our set benchmarks? Are they realistic? Are we providing what we say we provide? Do we need to modify benchmarks? Do we need to modify our program? Where do we need to create or enhance our tracking mechanisms? Where is the weak link in the chain? • Take a look at your list and ask yourself: How well does my evidence demonstrate CM’s achieving success meeting our benchmarks?

How to Implement Benchmarks • Develop program with benchmarks in mind • Entry to Exit, the goal is total alignment with program benchmarks • Schedule, academics, vocational, • Assessment piece must be built into the benchmark • Traditional tests, participant surveys, excel tracking devices, work evaluations, etc

  9. How do we measure Corps Benchmarks? • Data Collection • Data Reporting a. Private Funders b. Public Funders c. Potential Funders

  10. Reflection on the effectiveness of Benchmarks • Is the benchmark working? • Is this a case of changing the benchmark or changing the program? • What did we learn about CMs from the process? d. What did we learn about the Corps program from the process?
