Outcomes • To become familiar with the research on motivation • To understand the importance of active participation and effect on student achievement • To understand and articulate the educator’s role in engaging students in literacy activities
Research… • Motivated children will read more, achieve academically, and are more likely to be lifelong readers(Guthrie 1999; Morrow, 1992; Wigfield & Guthrie, 1997; Mazzoni, Gambrell, & Korekeamaki, 1999; Taylor, Frye, & Maruyama, 1990; Morrow, 1992; Wang & Guthrie, 2004). • Instructional factors (i.e. high-quality books, variety of genres, repeated readings, book discussions, writing process) influence student motivation(Teale & Gambrell, 2007).
Research continued • Reading aloud can increase vocabulary(Beck, McKeown, & Kucan, 2002; Temple & Snow, 2003; Brabham & Lynch-Brown, 2002; Sénéchal, 1997; Sharif, Ozuah, Dinkevich, & Mulvihill, 2003) • R.A. can increase listening comprehension skills(Morrow & Gambrell, 2002; Stanovich, Cunningha, & West, 1998; Teale, 1986), • R.A. can increase ability to recognize words(Chomsky, 1972). • Motivation is enhanced by feedback on the knowledge gained and from engaging tasks and activities(Marzano, 2003).
Main Points • Effective literacy activities that motivate students and teachers to become better readers, writers, and thinkers • Classroom activities and school-wide events engage and stimulate students and enhance their love of literature and learning • Draws in other members of the school neighborhood which helps to build a true community of learners
Specific Activities • Reader’s Theatre • Read-A-thons • Million Minutes • Vocabulary Bee • Music • Games • Young Author’s Conference • Photo Story
