  11. Road and Traffic Safety How to teach driving? How to learn driving? What you should know about driving? What are the costs of an accident? What are the consequences of an accident? What are the other impacts on the Community?

  12. Review both the drivers' handbook and the owner's manual • Agree on what responsibilities you will have. • The cost for fuel, insurance and vehicle maintenance. • List all rules and regulations in using the car/motorcycle. • It is a good idea to lay out these conditions in advance.

  13. Teaching to Drive

  14. Getting the Licence

  15. Help your son/daughter to get his or her learner's permit or provisional license. Tell them not to practice on public roads without it and the consequences of an accident (loss, job, school, fines, points, etc.).Review what the rules are for using the learner's permit.

  16. Find a place off the street and relatively free of obstructions for your drivers first experience behind the wheel. An empty parking lot after hours is a one choice.

  17. Practice controlling the car. • Accelerate and decelerate so that it is smooth and even. • Practice changing gears if it is a manual/Auto transmission car. • Drive in patterns, especially those that will be required in real driving situations. • Make left and right turns. Teachparking next to a curb or painted line. • Always signal and let the other driver know what you are doing.

  18. Parking • Try parking in the marked spaces. • Get comfortable with where the sides and back of the car are. • Practice backing the car. • Practice multiple times in the parking lot, get confident and consistent with basic controls and positioning

  19. First road experience: Choose a road with light traffic • Practice staying on the correct side and centered in the driving lane. • Advise stopping well back of other cars at stop lights. • A good rule of thumb is being able to see the wheels of the car in front. • Remind your student to leave plenty of space for stopping.

  20. When should you change lanes? You should never weave in and out of lanes of traffic. Reasons to change lanes : Your lane is ending. You plan to turn at an upcoming You are approaching hazards or obstacles in your lane. To pass safely.

  21. When and How to Change Lanes? If there is a car in the lane you want to move into that is approaching at a faster speed than you are traveling at, simply wait for the car to pass you and then make the lane change. Do not get in front of other cars randomly. Not only will it make the driver angry, but more severely, the driver might not have enough time to slow down behind you. Do not change lanes while you are driving through an intersection or approaching an intersection. Wait until you pass through the intersection to change lanes.

  22. Work up gradually to more involved driving situations, such as freeways, inclement weather, and heavy traffic.

  23. What is a Blind Spot? • While changing lanes – watch out!

  24. Blind Spot and Accidents • The National Highway Traffic Safety (USA) Administration estimates that there are 630,000 lane change/merge crashes each year, causing 225 fatalities. Needless to say, the “simple” act of changing lanes or merging requires precaution and practice. • Source: http://www.driversedguru.com/driving-articles/car-driving-skills/the-bge-mirror-setting-eliminates-blind-spots/

  25. How to adjust your mirrors? How to set up the Blind Spot and Glare Elimination (BGE) setting: • Place your head against the driver’s side window and adjust the driver’s side mirror so you can barely see the driver’s side of your car. • Move your head as close to the center of the car as possible and adjust the passenger’s side mirror so you can barely see the passenger’s side of your car. • To check your BGE settings, watch as a car passes you in an adjacent lane. It should enter your outside mirror before it leaves the rearview (inside) mirror. Also, the car should appear in your peripheral vision before it leaves the outside mirror. • Remember, your inside rearview mirror is your primary mirror and it will take time to get accustomed to no longer seeing the sides of your car in the side mirrors.

  26. Practice maneuvers that will be needed on the driver's test as well as techniques that will be needed for driving under real conditions.

  27. Rehearse for the driving test. Get some feedback, such as "watch your speed" or “ if you forgot to signal at a turn or changing lanes."

  28. Night Driving - Focus There are several reasons why driving at night is vision is sharply reduced, because your depth of field is reduced, and the low light makes it more difficult to focus on objects and makes it a dangerous situation.

  29. Glare at Night – Watch Out • The glare from the headlights of oncoming cars poses a potentially dangerous threat to all drivers in the night. Wear proper glasses with glare elimination. • Turn your head to avoid direct contact and adjust your mirrors for BGE.

  30. Animals • Animals on road – day or night – Little Patience is needed. • Many animals tend to be more active at night than during the day, be more careful. • Try to be considerate about the animal, but not at the expense of a dangerous situation.

  31. Drunk Drivers • Drunk drivers – Day and Night - Anytime • First of all you do not drink and drive • More people are drunk or high at night than they are during the day. • There’s also more drunk and high drivers on weekends than weeknights. • Be on high alert for strange driving behavior. If possible, turn on to a different road

  32. You know What happens with speed?

  33. Vehicle hit by Speeding Car

  34. What do you think happened in this accident?

  35. What is the right thing to do? Listen to our parents, teachers & elders Being careful while on road and watch traffic Learning to be patient and understanding things - WHY? Making the right CHOICES.

  36. Conclusions Learn the right way to drive with license; stop at red lights and stop signs. Know the cost of an accident and subsequent problems; not to speed. Be courteous on the road and not to rush anytime; avoid road rage and leave early always. Learn to respect others and yield for pedestrians and bicycle riders.
