  2. Going inside • 2500 BC:Harappan city builds indoor toilets. • Toilets empty into a brick-lined sewer. • Technology was lost when cities were invaded (1500 BC). • Advances then took place in Europe.

  3. Royal Flush • 1500 BC: Crete install first flush toilet. • When flushed, rainwater is released into a bowl and down clay pipes running through the palace. • An earthquake destroyed the toilet.

  4. Really Public Bathrooms • 800 BC: Cloaca Maxima = sewer system in Rome. • Public toilets above the sewer. • 11,000 seats on stone henches--no privacy. • Only one sponge on stick for wiping.

  5. This Job is in the Pits • 1300 AD: Europeans doing business in outhouses. • Richard Raker dies: falls through the rotted wood floor and drowns "monstrously in his own excrement."

  6. Heads Up • 1500’s: European’s relieve themselves in chamber pots. • When pot is full, toss contents out the window, shouting "Gardy-loo!" to warn anybody unlucky enough to be walking below.

  9. Stop Making Scents • 1775: Alexander Cummings patents device known as the S-trap, modern flush toilet born. • A valve keeps bowl filled with water. • Allows poop down without smells coming up.

  10. Sculptured Seats • 1885: Thomas Twyford introduces Unitas. • One­ piece, all-ceramic toilet. • Eliminates leaky joints that made earlier models smelly. • Toilets catch on quickly; unique designs.

  11. Minding Your Business • 1999: Panasonic builds smart toilet . • Bowl measures different aspects of body, from weight to chemical sensors. • Expect pot to be on market in a few years.
