  2. 1. What is the Story of Jesus? • Born in the town of Bethlehem and raised in Nazareth • Baptized by John the Baptist. Why is this weird? • Grew up a carpenter and began preaching in public at the age of 30 • For the next few years he preached, taught, did good works, and repeatedly performed miracles. • His growing popularity concerned both Jewish and Roman leaders. • They clamed that Jesus was not the Messiah and ordered him crucified. • This only made people more convinced that he WAS the Messiah…Why?

How does Christianity spread throughout the Roman Empire? • Following Christ’s death the religion took a new name “Christianity” and began to slowly but surely spread (More surely than slowly) • Who is Paul? • A Jew that never met Jesus and an enemy of Christianity until is saw Jesus (after death), then spent the rest of his life spreading and following the word • PaxRomana? • This called for safe travel and exchange and allowed the ideas of Christianity spread without issue. • Common Greek and Latin languages allowed the message to be spread easily

What was the appeal to make Christianity a World Religion? • Embraced all people • Men and women, enslaved persons, the porr, and nobles • Gave hope to the powerless • Appealed to those who were repelled by the extravagances of imperial Rome • Offered a personal relationship with a loving God • Christ died for ours sins • Promised eternal life after death • Good or bad • Constantine accepted Christianity • Hundreds or thousands of stories like this
