Who are the Franks, and how are they connected to the church? • The Franks are a Germanic people that held power in Gaul (France/Switzerland) • Clovis (leader) brought Christianity to the region (eventually led to great power for Catholic Church) • Appealed to the Christian God in battle against another Germanic army… • which they like… Won • The Church welcomed his conversion to Christianity and by 511 Clovis had united the Franks into one Kingdom • Duh he was powerful • The alliance between the Franks and the Church matched to very powerful forces • The Unstoppable Man • And • The Immoveable Object

What is the Carolingian Dynasty, and why is Charlemagne so famous? • Carolingian Dynasty (KAR-uh-LIHN-juhn) • An extension of rule from Clovis to Charlemagne • Charlemagne (SHAHR-luh-mayn) • Built an empire bigger than any since ancient Rome • Conquered East and West while spreading Christianity • By 800 his empire was larger than Byzantine • Was Crowned Emperor • Of Rome … Awareness!!! • After he died guess what happened?
