  1. CHAPTER 13.1 by: Hrak Magdesyan and Daron Yessayan

  2. Producers and Consumers Ecosystems: .Recall that each ecosystem includes biotic and abiotic

  3. How Organisms Relate .Ecology is the study of the interactions between living things and their environment

  4. Producers .Producers are organisms that use energy from the sun or chemical reactions to make their own food .Examples: .Algae, Microorganisms, some bacteria in the deep sea, and plants

  5. The Sun .Photosynthesis is a process that producers use to make their own food using energy from sunlight .It is the main pathway by energy and carbon enter the web of live

  6. Plants .When plants grow, they use the sugars produced during photosynthesis as energy and a source for carbon .The carbon combines with nitrogen and other nutrients

  7. Protists .Protists include Algae, Dinoflagellates, and Euglenas .Euglenas do not have roots, stems, or leaves

  8. Bacteria .Bacteria are single-celled organisms found nearly everywhere on Earth .Some bacteria called Cyanobacteria have been on Earth more than 3.5 billion years .Oxygen produced by Cynobacteria helped create Earth’s atmosphere

  9. Chemosynthesis .Some bacteria are able to make food using energy from chemical reactions .This process is called Chemosynthesis

  10. Consumers .Organisms that cannot make their own food are called consumers .All animals are consumers because they eat other organisms or their waste .Some consumers are too small to be seen with the naked eye. .Single-celled, animal-like protists, called protozoans, feed on living or dead organisms.

  11. Types of Consumers .Foods such as fruits, nuts, rice, and vegetables come from plants .Meat, milk, and cheese come from animals. .Different types of organisms get their energy from different types of foods

  12. Herbivores . Are animals that only eat plants

  13. Carnivores .Animals that eat other animals are called carnivores .The Venus flytraps is an example of a carnivorous plant .The Venus flytraps are producers and carnivors.

  14. Omnivore .Animals that feed on other animals and plants are omnivores

  15. Decomposers .Some organisms, called Decomposers, break down dead organisms, animal waste, leaves, and other waste produced by many things .They make nitrogen and other nutrients available to support new life by breaking down dead organic material

  16. Scavengers .Scavengers are organisms that feed on dead animals .Examples: .Crows, Vultures, Foxes, and Coyotes .Some scavengers eat waste from other organisms .Example: Dung Beetle
