20. Faculty of Health, Arts and Design • How does it work? Course structure: Two Coursework subjects: Narrative, Discourse Ideology, in Semester 1. Globalization, Subjugation, Liberation in Semester 2. Students can begin in either first or second semester, and take these units in either order. A Thesis Component: This consists of a thesis of 15,000 words. This stream accepts students from any major in the BA.

Faculty of Health, Arts and Design • Examples of Project More than a hundred students have completed this stream, with theses having been written in cultural studies, politics, philosophy, history, feminism, literature, film and media studies, Japanese studies and Italian studies. It is now designed to also serve students majoring in sustainability management. The titles of the four students’ theses who complete their degree last semester provides some idea of the range of topics that can be covered: Intersubjective Narrative Identity; Reviving Schelling’s Naturphilosophie; The Development of Human Rights; and A Philosophical Exploration of How Different Cultures Treat, Translate, and Transform Suffering.

22. Faculty of Health, Arts and Design • Expected Outcomes Graduates from this course frequently go on to postgraduate research courses, with more than ten graduates having completed Ph.D.s. Essentially, this is a trans-disciplinary course, providing the education traditionally known as ‘liberal arts’. It sets students up for a wide range of careers, and graduates have gone into, among other areas, the media, politics, journalism, NGOs such as Oxfam, the civil service, academia and business.
