  2. National Liberation Front(NLF) • Socialist political party in Algeria • Formed in 1954 to give Algeria freedom from France. • Caused revolts and opened civil wars in Algeria as it began guerrilla warfare*. *guerilla warfare: (n) the use of hit-and-run tactics by small, mobile groups of irregular forces operating in territory controlled by a hostile, regular force.

  3. NLF continued… • The National Liberation Front was indeed founded to support Muslim independence in Algeria. BUT, the plan became unsuccessful. • Govt. of the Fourth French Republic said that Algeria belonged to France and refused to compromise.

  4. Ho Chi Minh • Turned a national movement against French colonial rule into the Indochina Communist Party. • WWII established Ho Chi Minh as an anti-colonial, nationalist leader. • Achieved his position in Vietnam w/o help from Soviet or Chinese communists.

  5. Mr. Minh continued… • He declared Vietnams independence in 1945, under the Viet Minh*. • In 1947, Vietnam began a complete civil war. *Viet Minh: a group of nationalists that the communists dominated.
