  3. Who is Secure World Foundation? The Secure World Foundation (SWF) is a private operating foundation dedicated to the secure and sustainable use of space for the benefit of Earth and all its peoples 3

Some facts! • Non-profit, international NGO founded in 2004 • Offices in Brussels, Colorado, and Washington DC • Liaise/partner with international organizations, governments, agencies, militaries, industry, civil society, academia • Promote cooperative solutions for space sustainability • One core area is Space for Human and Environmental Security

  5. How can SWF support DM? • Increasing awareness of potential benefits from space assets – eg. APOGEO • Facilitating dialogue and cooperation at international level – eg. UN-SPIDER • Promoting ways to enhance use of space assets for human and environmental security – eg. Community Remote Sensing 5

UN-SPIDER Bonn Expert Meeting on the Use of Space-Based Information for Early Warning Systems (June 25-26, 2013, Bonn, Germany) • Co-organized by German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology, German Aerospace Center (DLR), German Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance • Focus on: • raising awareness for advances regarding the use of space-based information in early warning systems and disaster preparedness • identification and systematizing areas where space-based information can improve the functionality of existing early warning systems, • identifying knowledge management strategies that can facilitate access to and use of space-based information in early warning and preparedness and to bridge the space and the early warning communities 7

United Nations/Belarus Workshop on Space Technology Applications for Socio-Economic Benefits (11-15 November 2013, Minsk, Belarusia) Focus on: • increasing awareness among policy makers and planners on the socio-economic benefits of utilizing space technology • contributing to international cooperation by providing opportunities to exchange in-depth information on Space Technology Applications for Socio-Economic Benefits 8

SWF Activities Related to DM (1/4) • UN-SPIDER Bonn Workshop on Disaster Management and Space Technology: “Strengthening global synergies through knowledge management, portals and networks” (April 2012, Bonn, Germany) • Co-organized by Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology of Germany, German Aerospace Center, City of Bonn • Focus on: • Knowledge management in the context of space-based information • The role of Portals and Gateways as platforms to access space-based data and information to support all phases of the disaster risk management cycle • Synergies among international support networks and mechanisms 9

SWF Activities Related to WGCapD(2/4) Space for Human and Environmental Security in the Americas: Space policy, Long-term Sustainability and Cyber-health(April 2012, Mexico City, Mexico) • Co-organized with Mexican Government, Mexican Space Agency, CRECTEALC • Focus on: • Space policies that support space sustainability • Developing a road map for all countries in the Americas to participate in Project Cyber-Health • Identifying actions that could be taken in the Context of Climate Change Adaptation • Exchanging information on national space policies and possible space applications of common interest to countries from and outside the Americas Workshop/Simulation on Use of Space Applications in Humanitarian Operations(May 2012, Warsaw, Poland) • Co-organized with Space Research Centre PAS, Main School of Fire Service • Focus on: • Increasing awareness in the humanitarian community about space solutions that could support response to large scale crises • Potential to implement these solutions and recommendations for their use within existing international cooperative mechanisms 10

SWF Activities Related to WGCapD(3/4) Space Generation Congress 2012 (September 2012, Naples, Italy) • Co-organized by Space Generation Advisory Council • Focus on: • How space is used in humanitarian crises both effectively and ineffectively • How governments and NGOs can improve their use of space tools in humanitarian crises • How new methods (crowdsourcing) can contribute to their improved use of space tools for humanitarian crises United Nations/Chile Workshop on Space Technology Applications for Socio-Economic Benefits (November 2012, Santiago, Chile) • Co-organized by CIREN, ISPRS, NASA • Focus on: • Reviewing research and studies demonstrating the use of space technology for societal benefit • Priorities highlighted by the RIO+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (energy, cities, food, water, oceans and disasters) • Promoting integration of space solutions into national development agendas 11

SWF Activities Related to WGCapD(4/4) 3rd UN-SPIDER International Expert Meeting on Crowdsource Mapping for Disaster Risk Management and Emergency Response (December 2012, Vienna, Austria) • Co-organized by UN-SPIDER, Austrian Government • Focus on: • Connecting crowdsourcing, space, and disaster management communities • Finding ways of better coordination amongst those stakeholders • Promoting the use of Crowdsource Mapping networks in disaster management efforts GEO European Projects Workshop & GEO Plenary Meeting (Rome/Italy & Foz do Iguacu, Brazil, 2012) • SWF invited by European Commission to participate in its GEO activities • SWF became an Observer of the Group on Earth Observation (GEO) 12

GEO side event - Natural Disaster Mitigation and Earth Observations (EO): a GEOSS perspective (13 January 2014, Geneva, Switzerland) • Focus on: • stimulating discussion between data/service providers and end-end users • figuring out feasible solutions and mechanisms to enable decision makers, urban and land planners and disasters managers to have access to actionable information and data useful to their daily work 14
