  2. About meChloe PrentoulisHut 403 • Psychology was my major at UC Berkeley (BA) and Columbia (MA) • This is my 10th year teaching • I’ve also taught in NYC, Guadalajara and Mexico City (habloespanol!) • I grew up in England, Greece, CA, NYC

  3. About this course • Psychology 105, affiliated with Antioch university • Covers: • Biology of the nervous system (brain, nerves, biochemistry) • Personality (who are you? Why?) • Perception and our senses (sight, taste, touch..) • Abnormal psychology (disorders, treatments) • Social psychology (people, interactions, norms, racism) • States of consciousness (hypnosis, dreams, drugs) • Developmental psychology (timeline of your life) • And more…

  4. Course highlights! • Some naughty stuff – need parental consent! • Professional hypnotist visit/self hypnosis • Violate norms project • Go out into the city and bother people • Example: http://youtube.com/watch?v=wI8Au9g1QFU • Lots of talk about SEX!!! • Brain and eyeball dissections • Lot’s of online games, personality tests, puzzles, optical illusions, videos • We watch Mean Girls (there’s an entire class on this movie at Stanford University!!)

College Course – how is it different? • Next year you can take regular psychology, college psychology or maybe advanced physics/another course • Regular psych and college psych will cover the same material at the same pace, BUT: • College psych will include regular assigned reading • More quizzes/tests • Harder quizzes tests • A bit more work/homework

  6. …. So why do it? • If you pass you gain THREE COLLEGE CREDITS! • Helps you get into good universities • Saves you money – potentially worth $1000’s! • You’ll learn more • Good preparation for college • Little extra work = big extra benefit

How to apply • Complete the assignment I hand out today • Sign the interest sheet • Not a commitment, just interest • Admittance to course will depend on your past record, completion of assignment, spaces available • Hand it to me IN PERSON or PUT IT IN MY BOX by May 24, no later, no exceptions!

  8. Assignment – DUE 5/24! • Research personality disorders, chose one that interests you • Create a person who has this disorder. Describe: • Occupation • Appearance • Relationships • Childhood • Format is up to you – poster, booklet etc • I’m looking for academic accuracy, creativity, quality • Detailed instructions are on handout (also posted on my DP, left nav bar)
