  3. Reform of Education in Sustainability & Climate in Urban Environments

  4. the RESCUE project • The partners Lahti University of Applied Sciences (LUAS, Finland), Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU, UK, Scotland) and University of Salento (UdS, Italy) have been funded an EU – Erasmus Life Long Learning Programconcerning a new integrated Master’s coursecombining traditional urban planning with environmental science and management. • The project will last from October 2012 till June 2015. The programme will lean on a strong interaction with all types of stakeholders and partners from working life in every country. • The project budget is 512 229 € (total; EU grant applied is 380 000 €)

  5. the project: webpage http://rescueproject.wordpress.com/

  6. the project: focus areas • In the project we are providing studies on behalf of our strengths: • LUAS by urban planning and interaction • GCU by environmental management, GIS and climate change effects • UdS by scientific research on climate change • The project develops a common knowledge base and eLearning platform for the study programme and pilots short courses to environmental professionals. Attention is paid to the quality of the studies and their evaluation.

  7. the project: aim • Need for an integrated approachto adapt to and mitigate local and global climate change realities in a sustainable manner, by feeding three thematic strands (Science, Planning and Management) into a set of core urban modules intended for a Europe-based international Master’s programme

  8. the project: aim • To work towards the development of an Erasmus Multilateral MSc that produces high calibre post-graduates who are equipped with skills and knowledge to assess and manage climate change in the urban environment • The learning outcomes of the MSc are as follows: • Critical understanding of the complexity of sustainability and the need for local action to combat this global issue • Competencies in methods for the promotion and management of urban climate change • Application of principles of sustainability in key specialist areas, like urban planning and architecture • Develop critical intellectual and practical skills in the collection, analysis, interpretation of data related to urban climate change and sustainability • Appreciation of the role of planning in managing urban climate change the need for explicit and inclusive community engagement • Enhance interpersonal, communications and other transferable skills so that they are competent to operate in senior positions in both public sector and in industry • Develop skills in research methods and practice to allow for advanced research in sustainability to be undertaken.

  9. the project: learning path

  10. the project: WPs WP1: will track and coordinate the other WPs WP2: will identify requirements for future practice via a ‘steering group’ and other key stakeholders to ensure the syllabus and module development. This delivers the framework for WP3 Content Development. WP4: together with WP3, delivers the production model, which will be piloted in a ‘block-release’ mode for professionals in partner or associate universities. The lessons learnt will help us validate (in WP5). This process will follow the Bologna directives. A full Pilot Test is included in WP7. After final QA validation adjustments, the curriculum will be delivered. WP6: web site, brochures, targeted newsletters, dissemination events in every partner country, e-mail alert lists.

  14. the project: events • Kick-off meeting in Lecce • 10th-11th January at the University of Salento • organization of the Needs Assessment workshop (May 2013 in Lecce)

  15. the project: events • Workshop in Lecce – 13 May 2013 • “Interlinks between climate change, education and economic growth” • Will bring together experts in the fields of climate change, sustainability and related topics as well as target stakeholders, local authorities, educational institutes and private companies The goal is to: • state of art understanding in the above areas, current and challenges • generate elements to evaluate gaps in knowledge on existing formal educational programs in Europe and elsewhere • improve current educational systems by incorporating on current implemented curriculum knowledge of climate change and urban sustainability • The contribution of stakeholders is essential if a market for a MSc post graduate course focused on Sustainability and Climate Change in Urban Environments has to be created in each country for future environmental managers!

  16. the project: questionnaire Questionnaire about the challenges and knowledge gaps in education to collect ideas!

  17. the project: UdS team • Support thedevelopment of curriculum and its exploitation within the hard science aspects of urban climate, air pollution and climate change in connection with urban planning and sustainability • Coordinate the exploitation of project results including the coordination in running the pilot course • Assist in the overall management of the project Contact information Silvana Di Sabatino silvana.disabatino@unisalento.it +39 0832 297086
