  4. Students of the 2nd Gymnasium of Toumpa are discussing about Bioethics The three study cases addressed in our School Bioethics Committees: 1. Embryo-transfer error!! (a black baby in a white mother's womb) => Abortion YES or NO? 2. Therapy only with Embryonic Stem Cells => YES or NO? 3. A demand for euthanasia of a paraplegic man => YES or NO?

Students of the 2nd Gymnasium of Toumpa are discussing about Bioethics Students participated in committees to consider a specific different bioethical issue and they decided through their vote about their case.Their answer was documented in 1-2 paragraphs and presented as the official decision of each Committee. In plenary they announced the decision of each Committee. The role of teacher was only to coordinate and to facilitate the existing problems.

Students of the 2nd Gymnasium of Toumpa are discussing about Bioethics The participation of the students in "Bioethics Committees' has developed their responsibility and their cooperativeness, the teamwork was a goal and finaly they had the oppurtunity to decide for serious issues.   Because of their age, we did not judge their decisions -if they are right or ot- but we encourage their journey to reach an understanding of the isssuesinvolved..

Students of the 2nd Gymnasium of Toumpa deepen in Bioethics The past school year 2012-13 we had a cooperation with the European Commission and we prepared and presented the play on bioethics, written by the University of Singapore. This effort was a pilot, as it involves the art in contemporary bioethical issues. Simultaneously, engaging the local agencies and institutions in the development of an open presentation of the project. This is a great experience.

  19. Students of the 2nd Gymnasium of Toumpa deepen in Bioethics SOME CONCLUSIONS 1. Teaching ethics/bioethics in the students of the age of 15 is a very complicated work. 2. Teaching ethics through the art (i.e play theatre) is an attractive and innovative method. 3. When young students confront contemporary ethical issues and teachers demand their opinions/decisions, the main outcome is the preparation of responsible citizens. 4. In our 2 years experience in Thessaloniki-Greece, either through school committees of bioethics, either through the art, we teached our students to learn,to think, to decide about serious contemporary issues.

  21. Questions addressed to participants19th November 2014Ethics in Education What do we expect to achieve by teaching ethics? What is an appropriate age to start? Assuming we know the answer to No 1, can we achieve the same or better using other means/courses/activities? (Social psychology, legal courses, art?) Should national Ethics Committees participate in the design of such courses/activities? What is the role of the educator: is he/she acting as a conveyer of ideas or/and the devil’s advocate? Does he/she require informed consent from parents to engage with the students (especially young (?) students)?
