  5. Choose elements of the urban heritage of Safranbolu that relate to the criteria(on). Define their heritage importance. Why the city of Safranbolu inscribed on the world heritage list? Write down the criteria(on) used by UNESCO. Évora Safranbolu For centuries, the caravan trade was the main commercial link between the Orient and Europe. As a result, characteristic towns developed along its route. With the emergence of railways in the 19th century, these towns abruptly lost their raison d’être, and most of them were adapted to other economic purposes. After the collapse of the caravan trade, Safranbolu’s proximity to the Karabük steel works gave it a new socio-economic role, although it preserved its original form and buildings to a remarkable extent. (ii) to exhibit an important interchange of human values, over a span of time or within a cultural area of the world, on developments in architecture or technology, monumental arts, town-planning or landscape design; (iv) to be an outstanding example of a type of building, architectural or technological ensemble or landscape which illustrates (a) significant stage(s) in human history;

  7. Safranbolu Évora The challenges are economical, social and more importantly structural that being related to the village building maintenance and protection. Has lost their productive work force due to the economical changes in the region, county and the world. Once being a prosperous community, whose prominent members were business owners in majors cities of Turkey, was able to maintain the buildings in the village and its permanent habitants  in the village. These relatively sudden changes in economy and demographics of the society have been taking its tolls on the village’s structural elements such as it historical building, facilities, roads and pastures. Resolving the inheritance problem and addressing the lack of availability for the insurance offerings may also increase the private corporate investments in the buildings and village without destroying its natural and historical fabric. The fountain of the Giraldo’s Square was built in 1571. According to tradicion the eight scowls match to the eight streets that come out in the square. It’s classified as Nacional Monument and it’s situated at the famous Giraldo’s Square. The fountain is made of white marble and presents challenges for ages, like: the weather and the birds poop (birds walk throught the square every day) that corrodes the fountain marble, as well as the weight of her age (445 years old). This problem has already been cared with the town hall catched up the birds and took them to the right places, also the cleaning of the fountain has being taked care more effectively. It is and has always been the most visited and appreciated monuments by turists and also by the local people.
