  2. Observation • Something that you see, hear, smell, taste or touch. • Should be accurate and observable by others.

  3. Inference • An attempt to explain your observations • A guess about the most likely explanation

  4. Goal: Form a defendable explanation from what we see in the fossil footprints. • What do you observe? • What can you infer? (Based on your observations, what is your best explanation for the picture?)

  5. Does your first explanation need to be modified? Why? What new evidence do you observe? What new inferences can be made?

  6. Create a plausible story from the evidence to explain what happened.
