  3. The Serpent & SatanGenesis 3:1a Serpent refers to both the physical animal (snake) & Satan who was speaking through it (Rev. 12:9; 20:2) Ezekiel 28:12-15 – description of him Isaiah 14:12-14 – Satan’s fall This happened after the 6th day, but before the events of Genesis 3

  4. Satan Satan = “adversary” Devil = “slanderer” Apollyon = “destroyer” Beelzebul = “lord of the flies” Belial = “wicked” Lucifer = “star of the morning”

  5. Satan Also called: murder, evil one Titles include: god / ruler of this world, ruler of demons, serpent of old, prince of power of the air. Names & titles reflect character – evil, fierce, deceitful, conceited & cowardly

  6. Satan Satan’s goal = usurp God Satan’s methods = anything that works Christians need not fear – James 4:7 Non-Christians under his power – Ephesians 2:2 His final destiny – the lake of fire (Revelation 20:10)

  7. The SerpentGenesis 3:1a Crafty – unhindered, prudent, intelligent, wise The woman is not surprised by a talking serpent

  8. The Temptation & FallThe Opening Question – Genesis 3:1b-2 Designed to introduce a new idea She would have previously thought the warning as a blessing:

  9. The Temptations & FallThe Lies – Genesis 3:4,5 He accuses God of not telling the truth He accuses God of withholding good things from her – the fruit & being like God God knows good & evil by omniscience She would know it by experience – & then receive its consequences

  10. The Temptations & FallGenesis 3:4,5 She was already like God – made in His image, sharing His moral attributes She would become less like God for her abilities & character would be corrupted She would become like Satan

  11. The Temptations & FallGenesis 3:4,5 Satan is effective because he disparages God so that we might believe his lies he entices us in the three main areas of our desires

  12. TemptationGenesis 3:6,7 James 1:14-14 – enticed by our own lust 1 John 2;15-17 The lust of the flesh; eyes; pride Enticed by something illegitimate Enticed to fulfill legitimate desires by illegitimate means

  13. The FallGenesis 3:6,7 She ate & gave to Adam, and he ate Adam failed to protect the garden Adam failed to protect the woman Mankind’s sin nature is traced to Adam, not Eve – Romans 5:12; 1 Cor. 15:22f How to handle temptation? See Jesus’ response in Matthew 4:1-11

  14. The Consequences:Genesis 3:8-21 Fear – vs. 8-10 The hid themselves from God Excuses – vs. 11-13 Adam blamed the woman – and God She blamed the serpent The serpent was speechless

  15. The Curse on the SerpentGenesis 3:14-15 The serpent loses legs & must crawl – the crafty became humbled Enmity between him & woman All animals were also cursed

  16. The Curse on the SerpentGenesis 3:14-15 “your seed” – Satan & his followers (John 8:44; 1 John 3:10) “Her seed” – a future savior that would crush the serpent’s head (kill it) Jesus, the only person born without a human father Satan would cause Him to suffer, but would be crushed himself

  17. The Curse on the WomanGenesis 3:16 Multiplied sorrow, pain in childbirth Strained marital relationship Desire for husband But he will rule over her She can only get what she wants from her man if the Lord changes his heart

  18. Curse on Adam & the EarthGenesis 3:17-19 Adam listened to the voice of the woman instead of the voice of the Lord The ground was cursed Thorns & thistles (weeds) would grow He would toil & eat “by the sweat of his face” He would return to dust

  19. Naming Eve & The AtonementGenesis 3:20-21 Adam called his wife “Eve” – living – the mother of all the living All humans descended from Adam & Eve – none pre-date or contemporary

  20. Naming Eve & The AtonementGenesis 3:20-21 The Lord made them garments out of animal skins for clothing You must kill the animal to get its skin Atonement = “covering” God made the first sacrifice – an animal died in the place of Adam & Eve and provided the covering for their sin

  21. The ExpulsionGenesis 3:22-24 God drives them out of the garden and then guards it with an angel Why not let them eat & live for ever? They would be left in their sinful state They must trust God to provide the means of forgiveness, restoration & eternal life with Him

  22. Conclusions Adam & Eve rejected God’s way for their own way & lost His blessing & gained condemnation We can be forgiven in Jesus Christ, but we must still choose to obey God or go our own way with its consequences Which path do you want to follow?
