  3. What do you need to obtain a work permit or certificate? Sally,15, would like to baby sit for her neighbor. Does she need a work permit or certificate? What is the Answer? • Ralph, 16, has been considering working on a farm. Does he need a work permit?

  4. Obtaining Employment Certificates and Permits • Where? • Your home school district. • What is Needed? • 1) Written permission from parent to work • 2) Proof of age • 3) Certificate of Physical fitness

  5. Employment Certificates • Student Non-factory • Student General • Full-Time

  6. Student Non-Factory Employment Certificates (AT-18, blue paper) * Work in any trade, business, or service * 14 or 15 years old * But NOT work in a factory or dangerous materials/chemicals

  7. Student General Employment Certificate (AT-19, green paper) * Must be attending school 16 or 17 years old Work in factory or any other trade, business or service * NOT valid for hazardous jobs

  8. Full-Time Employment Certificate (AT-20, salmon paper) * 16 or 17 years old • Work in factory or any trade, business or service. • * NOT attending school * CANNOT work in hazardous jobs

  9. Farm Work Permits Permit to Harvest Berries, fruits and vegetables. Newspaper Carrier Permits Street Trade Permits Child Model Permits Performer Permits Permits * Federal law requires a minimum age of 16 to operate power driven machinery including power-driven lawn mowers.

  10. Farm Work Permits • (AT-24, yellow paper) • 14-15 years old • Working on vacation, before or after school hours or on days that school is closed. • CANNOT work in a factory or cannery • Permit MUST be signed by each employer • Minor can change farm job using the same permit

  11. Hand Harvest Permits • (AT-25, white paper) • 12-13 years old • Hand Harvest of berries, fruits and vegetables • Minors MUST be accompanied by a parent or MUST provide the employer with parents’ written consent to work

  12. Newspaper Carrier Permits • (AT-23, buff paper) • 11-18 years old • Delivery or sale and delivery of newspapers, shopping papers, or periodicals to homes or places of business • Minors MUST carry the permit while working

  13. Street Trade Permits • (AT-26, ivory paper) • 14-18 years old • Self-employed • Sell newspapers or periodicals on the streets or public places • Or who work as shoe shiners

  14. Child Model Permits • (AT-12, green booklet) • Under 18 years old • Employment of child models

  15. Performer Permits • These permits are issued by the chief executive of the municipality in which the performance takes place.

  16. Other Types of Certificates • Certificate of Age • Obtain from school authorities • Employers keep on file while minor is employed as proof of age

  17. EXCEPTIONS:NO PERMITS REQUIRED • Caddy on a golf course ( 14 years old+) • Baby sitter (14 years old+) • Farm Permit (16 and 17 years old) • Working on home farm or outdoor work not connected with a business (12 years old+) • Nonprofit college, university, student association, fraternity, sorority, or faculty association (16 or 17 years old) • Casual employment of yard work , household chores in a resident, nonprofit organization (14 and 15 years old)

  18. Employer Holds Student Non Factory Student General Full-Time Employment Certificate Temporary Placement Agencies hold original certificates Minor Holds (Must Be in Possession at All Times) Farm Work Permits Model Permits Newspaper Carrier Permits Street Trade Permits Location of Certificates

Other Important Information • When the minor leaves a job, the employer MUST return the certificate to the minor • Students with several jobs can request multiplecopies of certificates and permits • Minors can work for an unlimited number of employers using: • Student Non-factory Employment Certificate • Student General Employment Certificate • Full-Time Employment Certificate
