  1. PROJECT :Development of an OSCE resources TOOL for Dental Materials in their Clinical Application T. Lodhi lodhidr@gmail.com

  2. STEP I EVALUATION OF STUDENTS’ UNDERSTANDING OF BASIC CONSERVATIVE DENTAL MATERIALS AIM Evaluate the core understanding of common conservative dental materials in their clinical application OBJECTIVE Ascertain whether preference for a material is based on sufficient core knowledge of individual materials to understand clinical implications and application, namely:- Dental Amalgams Resin Composites Glass Ionomers and Resin modified Glass Ionomers Luting cements METHODOLOGY By means of a questionnaire, with questions on : Names of materials, with their trade names Clinical advantages and disadvantages of silver Amalgams Clinical advantages and disadvantages of Resin Composites Differences between GIC and RMGIC and hence clinical handling Names of Luting cements and their specific applications

  3. STEP II QUESTIONAIRRE 1.List the names of dental materials, you commonly use in conservative dentistry (List both the name and trade-name) OBJECTIVE: To Test the student’s knowledge of different materials and their trade-names. 2. Do you prefer Resin composites or silver Amalgams, for posterior restorations? 3. List 5 clinical advantages and 5 clinical disadvantages of using silver amalgams 4. List 5 clinical advantages and 5 clinical disadvantages of using Resin composites OBJECTIVE: To Test whether the preference above is related to the student’s clinical knowledge of the Amalgams and Resin Composites. 5. Name a Glass Ionomer material you have used, and for what procedure 6. Name a Resin Modified Glass Ionomer you have used, and for what procedure 7. List the steps in the placement of Vitremer when bonding Amalgam OBJECTIVE: To Test whether the student knows the difference in constituents and therefore clinical handling 8. Name 3 luting cements (with trade names) and what they are specifically used to cement

  4. STEP III O.S.C.E DENTAL MATERIALS O.S.C.E Pre-Clinical Conservative Dentistry T. Lodhi

  6. The following are used in adhesive dentistry.1. Name each component2. What is the function of each component a, b, and c? b c a

  7. The powder below is dispensed using the spoon. (E.g a glass ionomer based)Describe the correct manner in which the powder should be collected with the spoon.

  8. What are the strips below used for?(Notice each has different ends serving different purposes)

  9. Each of the following component is attached when applying certain materials in conservative dentistry. What could a. be used for? What could b. be used for? What could c. be used for? b c a

  10. These are used in Endodontics1. What are they called?2. What is their function?

  11. 1. What are the discs shown below called?2. What are they used for?3. What is the difference in the use of the three shown below.

  12. After using the material below, how would you store them?(take into consideration one is a liquid, the other a powder; they are capped; and have tinted storage bottles).

  13. 1. What is the horse-shoe shaped paper below called?2. When is it used?3. How is it used?

  14. This is used in the etching of enamel and dentine.1. What is it?2. What concentration is normally used for this purpose?3. What are the etching times for Enamel and Dentine respectively? What other types of etchants are used in dentistry, and on what surfaces?

  15. You find these 3 different coloured holders in your instrument tray.Suggest during which procedure they may used for

  16. Below is used when placing a Class II restoration on a tooth…..Name the types of band holders that can be used when placing Class II restorations, indicating those for silver amalgam fillings or resin composites….or both.

  17. What is the paper shown below called? When is it used?Which materials would require the use of these? For materials not requiring the paper shown below, what is preferred and why?Name these materials.

  18. What are the items shown below? How are they used? Why is it necessary to put the cap back on after use?

  19. What is the name given to the cord below? When are they used? What types are available and how are they differentiated?

  20. What is the classification of Impression materials used in dentistry?Give an example for a clinical case whereby each one of the impression materials named above may be used.

  21. The material below is used as lining material for deep cavities…What material could this possibly be?Describe how the 2 tubes are mixed, dispensed and placed in the cavity. What precautions must be taken when placing on the surface of the tooth?

  22. You have been asked to restore a class II cavity on a posterior tooth……After examining the patient and tooth using the instruments below, name all the other instruments you would require for the above procedure.

  23. Below are Gutta Percha points used in EndodonticsWhat do the different colours, namely yellow, red and blue represent? What is the name of the procedure in endodontics where they are used?Explain how the above procedure is carried out?

  24. Below is a curing machine used for light polymerization of resin composite restorationsWhat colour light is emitted?Which range of the light spectrum does its wavelength fall under?Name the different types (mode of light production) of light curing machines. What precautions need to be undertaken to maintain a quartz tungsten halogen curing light?

  25. The patient below wants to have the chip on his right central incisor restored. What is the very first treatment that needs to be carried out?Describe in steps how you would restore this tooth.

  26. Name the restorative options with their advantages and disadvantages for replacing the Silver Amalgam fillings for the : Class I on the premolar Class II on the molars Buccal pits on the molars

  27. What materials are used when cementing/luting a……a. Metal crown or bridgeb. Porcelain crownc. Indirect Composite restoration

  28. Explain all the steps the dentist carried out when bonding the brackets shown below

  29. What is being done below?Explain the manner in which this is done at your institution and using what technique?Notice the staining on the upper teeth? What stains could they possibly be?What would be your differential diagnosis and how would you treat each?

  30. END Of OSCE

  31. STEP IV OSCE EVALUATION FORM(for students to complete after the OSCE) Rating each of the statements on a scale from 1-5. • 1 =Strongly agree • 2= Agree • 3= Not sure • 4= Disagree • 5= Strongly disagree 1. Structure • I understood the questions asked • There was enough time to answer the questions. • The OSCE covered topics which were covered in the lectures. • Your comments on the structure of the module 2. Assessment • The questions required me to have more of an understanding of the materials, rather than memorizing facts, to answer the questions • This OSCE will help me find my strengths and weaknesses. • This OSCE will better prepare me for clinical work on patients, later this year • Your comments on assessment of the module 3. Comments What can be done to improve your experience of learning in the module of Dental Materials?
