Learning Outcomes for the Lesson • Identify the roles of members of the school team • Examine the strategic purpose of the roles of the school team • Demonstrate understanding of the roles of external professionals who may work within a school, • Understand and explain a school’s ethos, mission, values and aim are • Decide how the school ethos, mission, values and aim may be reflected in working practice • Evaluate methods of communicating a school’s mission aims and values

  4. 2.2.1. Strategic Roles – School Governors, Management, Teachers, Support Staff School Governors: - largest voluntary group in UK. The governors will work hand in hand with the school principal and heads of department to ensure aims and objectives are met. Senior Management Team: - Size of school will determine size and membership - made up of the principal, deputy head, heads of year, SENCO. Role is in relation to strategic, operational direction the school will take

  5. Strategic Roles (cont.) • SENCO: (Special Educational Needs Co-Ordinator). The SENCO is normally a teacher from within the school who has undertaken specialist training. Their role is ensuring the day to day operation of the school’s special education policy. • Support and Ancillary Staff: Create a list and briefly describe roles.

ETHOS • ETHOS: Greek word ‘Character’ • Is the underlying guiding beliefs or ideals of a particular organisation. • School Ethos should be developed and constructed through discussion with staff, pupils, parents, governors and anyone with an invested interest in the school. • It underpins every aspect of school life, policies, procedures, behaviour management..

  11. Mission Statement • Written declaration of an organisation’s core purpose and focus. • It usually remains unchanged overtime. • Set by management team, governors based on input from other staff. • It should: • 1. Serve to filter what is important and what is not. • 2. Communicate a sense of direction for entire organisation.

  13. Aims and Objectives • Aim – A general statement giving the clear overall goal or intention of the organisation. • Objectives – Specific stages set out to attain aim. • E.g. Aim: Turn up for Classroom Assistants Course. • Objectives • 1. Transport to get here – Bus, car, walk • 2. Get child/pet/house minded • 3. Have books, stationery ect...

  14. VALUES • The ideals that the school believe are important based on the moral code (ethos) which informs its development. • They direct the behaviour and action of the school
