This lesson explores the essential characteristics that differentiate mammals and birds. Mammals, such as lions and manatees, are identified by traits including fur, live birth, and the ability to nurse their young. Even aquatic mammals, like dolphins, are included in this category. In contrast, birds are characterized by feathers, wings, and their reproductive method of laying eggs. This comparative overview helps in recognizing the unique features of these animal groups, enriching our understanding of wildlife.

Chapter 2 Animals
Mammals • Observe this lion…why do you think it is a mammal?
A lion is a mammal because: • It has fur that cover the skin on its body. • A lion also gives birth to live young not eggs. • The babies drink milk from their mothers’ bodies.
A manatee does not have fur. But still it is a mammal. • It has some hair on its skin. • A manatee mother gives birth to live young.
Animals that live in water but are mammals. • A manatee lives in water, but it has lungs, like other mammals.
Both a manatee and a dolphin rise to the top of the water to breathe in oxygen from the air.
Birds have feathers • They have wings and can fly • They hatch eggs
