“Honor your…mother”. Ephesians 6:1-3. honor. “to reverence…to respect…to esteem” Goes back to about 1440 B.C. Exodus 20:12 Was not man’s idea – it was God’s idea! It was not a suggestion, it was a commandment! It was a commandment because men have never been very good at this.

  2. honor • “to reverence…to respect…to esteem” • Goes back to about 1440 B.C. Exodus 20:12 • Was not man’s idea – it was God’s idea! • It was not a suggestion, it was a commandment! • It was a commandment because men have never been very good at this.

Not something to be done once a year • Something to be taught…instilled so that it was something done instinctively • It was an attitude of respect that you were to constantly possess • Done all of the time, every day, for as long as your parents lived and even beyond • Ephesians 6:1; Proverbs 1:8; 23:22

  4. “honor your father and mother” • Exodus 21:15 – strikes mother…put to death • “any level of maltreatment” • Exodus 21:17 – curses mother – put to death • Deuteronomy 27:16 – dishonor mother is cursed – by God • “Divine wrath” • Matthew 15:1-9 – hypocrites do not honor mothers

  5. honor our motherS • No one can overstate or should underestimate the influence that a mother has over her children • John Quincy Adams –”All that I am my mother made me.” • Abraham Lincoln – “All that I am or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.” • George Washington – “The greatest teacher I have ever had was my mother.”

  6. 2 timothy 1:3-5 • Mentions two mothers because of the influence they had on their son/grandson • Recognizes influence Timothy’s mother and grandmother had on him • Timothy had a “genuine faith” because of the “genuine faith” which his grandmother had, which she instilled in her daughter and his mother Lois.

  7. 2 timothy 3:14,15 • Timothy knew these things from “childhood” • How? How did he learn them? • Who taught him? • Lois and Eunice – his grandmother and mother • Mothers have such an opportunity to teach your children about Christ

Matthew 5:14 • Mothers – be a “light” to your children! • These are “dark times” • Gang activity widespread • Alcohol and drugs common • False religions/occult doctrines • Psychic hotlines/fortune tellers • Sexual immorality condoned/encouraged • Divorce widespread – values systems destroyed • Pornography, weapons & bombs @ mouseclick

Matthew 5:14 • Mothers – be a “light” to your children! • Be a place of comfort, peace and security • Let the light of God’s word be common place in your home • Let it be spoken, cherished and lived out • Let the light of truth, honesty, sincerity and integrity shine forth from your character • Let the light of good deeds, benevolence and unselfish service shine in your life • Let the light of Jesus Christ, trusted as Savior, obeyed as Lord, esteemed as Almighty God shine in all you do

Be a light for christ • Never give your child a reason to not want to come home • The task of being a mother is difficult • Don’t complicate it all the more • Don’t increase the risk of failure by neglecting time in prayer • Instill a strong faith in Christ in your children • IF they don’t get to heaven – they lose it all
