  4. Assumptions • This presentation assumes you currently possess a Tier 4 student visa to study at a UK higher education institution. • If you have another type of visa, or dependants, please make an appointment to see the International Student Adviser at your institution. • Information correct as of May 2018 but liable to change.

  5. Working using your student visa • On a Tier 4 Student visa you cannot: • Fill a permanent full-time vacancy • Be self-employed or engage in business activity • Be employed as a professional sportsperson/coach • Be employed as an entertainer • You should be very careful about doing any kind of work that is freelance or on a self-employed basis. • If you want to set up in business in the UK after your studies, you could apply for the Tier 1 Graduate Entrepreneur (Tier 1 GE) visa.

  6. Tier 1 Graduate Entrepreneur - sponsorship • “The Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur) route is for: • UK graduates identified by Higher Education Institutions (HEI) as having developed genuine and credible business ideas and entrepreneurial skills to establish one or more businesses in the UK; • Graduates who have been identified by the Department for International Trade (DIT) as elite global entrepreneurs seeking to establish one or more businesses in the UK.” (Tier 1 GE policy guidance) • You could be sponsored by the HEI at which you have studied (if they are a Tier 1 GE endorsing institution) or another HEI (providing they will sponsor graduates from other HEIs).

  7. Tier 1 Graduate Entrepreneur - sponsorship • Every year, the Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur) visa route is limited to 2000 places. • The places are allocated as follows: • 1900 for HEIs to endorse graduates in any subjects • 100 for DIT to endorse overseas graduates • Each HEI usually has 20 endorsements per year to offer.

  8. Tier 1 Graduate Entrepreneur - requirements • Your sponsor has to assess your business idea. You will need to check with your sponsor how they do this – eg application process. • Your business idea must be genuine, credible and viable. Sponsors cannot support a business idea involving property development or property management or a “routine business which will merely compete with other local traders”. • Your sponsor will issue you with an endorsement letter to confirm they have assessed your business idea and will sponsor you.

  9. Tier 1 Graduate Entrepreneur - requirements • You must have been awarded a UK recognised Bachelors, Masters or PhD degree. • Maintenance: • £945 for 90 days (applying in the UK) • £1890 for 90 days (applying overseas) • You do not need to show you have funds to start up your business for the visa application, but your sponsor will likely want to know that you have this. • You must not previously have been granted a Tier 1 Post Study Work (PSW) visa, a Fresh Talent: Working in Scotland visa, an International Graduate Scheme (IGS) visa or a Science and Engineering Graduate Scheme (SEGS) visa.

  10. Tier 1 Graduate Entrepreneur – points You will need 95 points: • 25 Points Valid endorsement from a Tier 1GE sponsor • 25 Points Endorsement confirms your business idea has been assessed • 25 Points Awarded a UK Bachelors, Masters or PhD • 10 Points English language (automatic if meet 75 points above) • 10 Points Maintenance (£945 for 90 days in UK, £1890 for 90 days outside UK)

  11. Tier 1 Graduate Entrepreneur - applying • Where can I apply? • In the UK or overseas • If overseas you need to show more money for maintenance • When should I apply? • Once you have been awarded a UK degree • Once you have a valid endorsement from a UK HEI • Within 3 months of the issue date of the endorsement • Once you have maintained the required funds for the 90 day period • How do I apply in the UK? • Paper application form available on www.gov.uk • Post your application or book in-person appointment

  12. Tier 1 Graduate Entrepreneur - conditions • The visa will be valid for 12 months. • It can be extended for a further 12 months if your progress is satisfactory to your sponsor. • After 24 months switch to Tier 1 Entrepreneur to continue working on your business. You will need available funds of £50,000 for this. • Can also switch to Tier 2 (for skilled work) or Tier 1 Exceptional Talent.

  13. Tier 1 Graduate Entrepreneur - conditions • The visa allows you to work full-time alongside setting up / running your business. • BUT you must spend majority of your time on your business. • You cannot work as a doctor or dentist in training, take a permanent job or work as a professional sportsperson, sports coach or entertainer. • When can I start working towards my business? • Once you have been awarded a UK degree AND • You have submitted a T1GE visa application (posted it or attended a visa appointment in person).

  14. Tier 1 Graduate Entrepreneur - engagement • Your Tier 1 GE sponsor is responsible for monitoring your engagement on your business and if this is not satisfactory they may withdraw sponsorship = curtailed visa. • You need to keep in touch with your sponsor regularly (twice over 12 months), let them know if you leave the UK for 60 days+ or permanently and if you switch visas.
