  2. Background information The Cavite Studies Center is an independent research unit of De La Salle University –Dasmariñas, located at the town of Dasmariñas, province of Cavite DLSU-D Lake Avenue

  8. Introduction • Local collection showcases local identity. • University libraries are mandated to develop local collection to respond to the needs of the immediate community. • There has to be one academic unit that should focus on local collection building.

Cavite Studies Center Rationale • To contribute to national and local scholarship and to keep track of the developments in Cavite. • To translate the vision-mission of the university in undertaking research focusing on local history and culture. • CSC is envisioned to be a major studies center in the Philippines.

Cavite Studies Center Brief History • Started initially during the time of Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) as part of the mandate of the Social Sciences Dept. • Became a separate unit of the institution when DLSU System took over EAC • Initial holdings were books loaned from the library, student projects on oral history collection and researched documents in the vertical file

  11. Cavite Studies Center Brief History • In 1998, CSC started its annual projects and programs which until now are being implemented: • Historical awareness campaign • Research and publications • Development of a library collection focused on Cavite province

  12. Cavite Studies Center Programs • Programs are divided into three: • Conduct of research/studies about the province of Cavite • Development of its library collection • Promotion of Cavite history and culture

  13. Cavite Studies Center Programs(RESEARCH) • Research is a major role played by academic institutions • In local studies, a lot of information await to be discovered • In DLSU-Dasmarinas, CSC is considered as a research unit and a resource center focusing on the study of local identity

Cavite Studies Center Programs(LIBRARY COLLECTION) • Envisioned to cater to researchers and scholars in local and international level • Already established several collection consists of the following: • Caviteniana collection • General reference • Periodicals • Microfiche/microfilm collection • Archival collection • Special collection

  15. Cavite Studies Center Programs(AWARENESS CAMPAIGN) • Tribute to local historian • Recognizing individuals who contributed to the development of Cavite studies • A way of enriching the CSC collection

  16. Cavite Studies Center Programs(AWARENESS CAMPAIGN) • Publications • Continuing thrust in information dissemination • Types of publication: • CSC Newsletter (Galeon) • Publication of faculty research outputs • The Cavite Historical Society supports CSC in publishing faculty research outputs

Cavite Studies Center Programs(AWARENESS CAMPAIGN) • Annual Seminar on Cavite History and Culture • A way to update the center and the public about the recent researches inside and outside the university • CSC has already compiled a compendium of researches/studies not usually found in libraries

Cavite Studies Center Programs(AWARENESS CAMPAIGN) • Annual Seminar on Cavite History and Culture • Seminar became a forum to discuss issues on Cavite history and culture • Papers presented are usually published • Hosting is currently rotated in various institutions • Already in its ninth year (1998-2007)

POINTERS IN ESTABLISHING/MAINTANING A LOCAL STUDIES CENTER • In drafting the goals/objectives • Must be in line with the regional development thrust and the provincial development agenda; • As part of the academe, it should be directly/indirectly articulated in the vision-mission of the university; • University development plans should also be consulted;

  21. POINTERS IN ESTABLISHING/MAINTANING A LOCAL STUDIES CENTER • Academic based • Should not be affected by a change of administration • Created as a separate unit of an institution • Will support institutional research program • Shall earn the reputation of being the guardian of local identity

POINTERS IN ESTABLISHING/MAINTANING A LOCAL STUDIES CENTER • Sustained Linkage • Must establish link with the LGUs, NGOs, and other agencies • Administration • Must be under the executive officers of an institution, either the president or VP post • Financial concerns • Must have its own operational budget

  23. SUMMING UP: BEYOND THE REGIONS: EFFORTS TO FOSTER NATIONAL IDENTITY THROUGH LOCAL STUDIES • Local studies centers play a major role in the documentation of national identity • Local studies centers are partners of the national government in reaching the grassroots level

SUMMING UP: BEYOND THE REGIONS: EFFORTS TO FOSTER NATIONAL IDENTITY THROUGH LOCAL STUDIES • Educational institutions, through their local studies centers, could participate meaningfully in the overall process of educating the public regarding the details of our national heritage • Local studies centers serve as link to the academic sector, the business sector, the government sector, and the community

SUMMING UP: BEYOND THE REGIONS: EFFORTS TO FOSTER NATIONAL IDENTITY THROUGH LOCAL STUDIES • Appreciation from the academic institution of the role of a studies center could be measured by making it as a separate unit of the institution, providing a separate facility, adequate financial assistance, and qualified personnel.

SUMMING UP: BEYOND THE REGIONS: EFFORTS TO FOSTER NATIONAL IDENTITY THROUGH LOCAL STUDIES • To maintain the dignity of the center, it should produce publications that are at par with the publications of major universities in Metro Manila. • Research outputs should be evaluated by respected scholars to ensure credibility and reliability of the studies conducted. With such credibility, local studies centers shall be looked upon as the vanguard of cultural heritage conservation in the regions.

  31. Sponsored Seminars/conferences Joint regional conference between the Cavite Studies Center and JDN Center for Kapampangan Studies held at Holy Angel University, Angeles Pampanga.

  32. Sponsored Seminars/conferences CSC hosted seminars focused on Cavite Galleon, jointly sponsored by NCCA, DFA and the Mexican Embassy CSC annual seminars focused on Cavite religiosity, Philippine Christian University

  33. CSC personnel in his paper conservation training in the graduate school. Although there are lot of donors of 19th century archival documents at CSC, the center finds it hard to accept donations due to lack of manpower, training and financial resources for document conservation.
