GTZ-Advisory Services in Environmental Management (ASEM) The Advisory Services in Environmental Management (ASEM) is a joint Programme of German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) and the Indian Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF). To improve the planning, development and management of industrial estates and industrial clusters in a sustainable manner through project based activities. To improve planning , financing and operation of urban environmental infrastructure in selected cities in a sustainable manner • Technically sound solutions for air quality monitoring, speedy data acquisition and studies for decisions on air quality management. • Demonstration of environmental improvement in Eco City Project towns. • Over 8,000 t/yr of e-waste managed in Bangalore • 1,465 Arsenic Removal Water Treatment Plants set up catering to about 4,70,000 people in West Bengal. • Transformation process of industrial parks in Andhra Pradesh in phased manner. • Relocation of about 80 electroplating industries from congested residential areas of Madurai • HAWA Project: Facility to handle 40 t/yr of hazardous waste for 20 yrs, reducing risks from wild dump sites and polluting industries. Results/Outcomes/Impacts ASEM THRUST AREAS Results/Outcomes/Impacts To mainstream environmental concerns into policy making and development of guidelines for the other three thrust areas. To strengthen consumer protection institutions at local level and contribute in improving the institutional and legal framework at national level. ASEM has Human Resource Development and Climate Change aspects as cross cutting areas contributing to various thrust areas Results/Outcomes/Impacts • State of the art laboratory is operational at CPCB for measuring POPs and other trace organics • Facilitating implementation of Stockholm Convention on POPs for which India is a signatory • Consumer information and market transparency • Creating Environmental awareness • Improve efficiency of legal metrology system through upgrading of model laboratories and capacity building and decentralisation. Results/Outcomes/Impacts Results/Outcomes/Impacts • The current climate change initiatives include SME clusters in 5 different sectors, Iron and Steel, Textile, Pulp and Paper, Glass Foundry, Steel forging and re-rolling.
