  1. Welcome to Physics! • This is Rm. 1115 – Physics! • Please find a seat so we can get started  • Mrs. Bennett bennettk@issaquah.wednet.edu (425) 837 – 7766 https://sites.google.com/site/physicsbennett

  2. ALBERT EINSTEIN[1879 – 1955] “I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious.”

  3. Before General Relativity After General Relativity (results of his difficulty with mathematics)

  4. To Be Successful in Physics... Always remember: Don't memorize … understand. Guiding Principles in Physics: • To know physics is to dophysics • Processis more important than results • Creativityis more important than knowledge

  5. Welcome to General Physics! 2013-2014 Everything you need to know about this year

  6. Required Equipment • Tab in 3-Ring Binder • Graph Paper • Notebook Paper • 2 Composition Notebooks • Scientific Calculator • Metric Ruler • Protractor • Tape Dispenser • Ink Pens • Highlighters • Pencils and Erasers • Dry Erase Marker (s) • USB Drive A required equipment supply check will be done at the beginning of class on: Monday, September 9

  7. Grading Scale and Categories • Grading Scale: A = 100-93.0% A - = 92.9-90.0% B+ = 89.9-87.0% B = 86.9-83.0% B - = 82.9-80.0% C+ = 79.9-77.0% C = 76.9-73.0% C - = 72.9-70.0% D+ = 69.9-67.0% D = 66.9-63.0% D - = 62.9-60.0% F= below 60.0% • Categories: Unit Tests/Quizzes = 35% Homework = 20% Laboratory Work = 35% Final Exam = 10%

  8. Semester 1 Topic Outline • Unit 1: Measurement • Metric Units • Accuracy vs. Precision • Random and Systematic Errors • Significant Figures • Correct measuring and Graphing Techniques • Unit 2: Mechanics • Vectors and scalar quantities • Velocity and Speed • Acceleration • Displacement and Distance • Graphing Motion • 1-Dimensional Mechanics • Free-Fall • Unit 3: Motion in 2 Dimensions • Vector Components • Projectile Motion • Unit 4: Forces & Newton’s Laws • Newton’s 3 Laws of Motion • Force Diagrams • Net Force • Apparent Weight • Forces in 2 dimensions (objects hanging from cables; objects on inclines)

  9. Classroom Expectations • Be Prepared • Be an Asset to the Class • Be Engaged • Be Respectful • Be On-Task • Be Reliable • Be Orderly • Be Safe

  10. Attendance • Be here! We do something important every day and you may not be able to make it up when you return! • Be on time! • You will receive two warnings for tardies and on the third tardy you will be assigned to classroom clean up before or after school for each additional tardy per quarter.

  11. Electronics Policy • Please do not cause distractions with cell phones, iPods, MP3 players, handheld gaming devises, or calculators. • The first time I see it, you will get a warning • 1st offense: I’ll keep it until the end of class • 2nd offense: I’ll keep it until the end of the school day • 3rd offense: You will need to pick it up from the office

  12. Journals and Binder Tab • You will be keeping a journal that has all of your homework, notes, and warm-ups/cool-downs (everything except labs). • Every quarter, I will randomly check your journals to see if they are complete and up to date. • Labs will ALWAYS be done on a loose piece of paper so you can turn it in! • The tab in your 3-ring binder will be for holding onto labs and handouts that are two large for your journals.

  13. WebAssign and TurnItIn.com • We will be using an online homework service for summative assessments and quizzes: WebAssign.net • The cost is $10.50 per student (listed in course catalog) • Find the class registration key on my website • Sign-up NO LATER THAN MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 9! • You can also find our class code for TurnItIn.com on my website. • All labs and typed papers will be submitted • Sign-up NO LATER THAN MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 9!

  14. Stamps • We will be using small completion homework sets to practice our skills frequently. • To provided timely feedback, I will stamp for completion credit before review the assignment in class and answering questions • You are responsible for your stamp sheet. It is the only record of your unit homework score! • I will accept late work for 5 school days after the due date for ½ credit. • I don’t give “busy work,” all assignments have a purpose!

  15. Labs • All labs will be completed on loose leaf notebook paper • DO NOT do labs in your journals, I will not accept them • Formal Labs require all information to be data processed (Word, Equation Editor, etc). • Graphs will be done in LoggerPro. NO EXCEL GRAPHS! Download and install it using the directions on my website no later than Monday, September 9! • Informal Labs are still very important, but generally require less analysis and do not have to be typed. • ALL LABS WILL BE COMPLETED ENITRELY ON YOUR OWN! NO EXCPETIONS! • Identical lab reports will receive a 0, a call home, and a report for academic dishonesty.

  16. Test and Quizzes • Most units will have at least one quiz. • Before any assessment, you will receive a review that outlines exactly what is on the test/quiz. • Please take review assignments seriously! • The unit test will cover material from the entire unit. • You will be allowed to use a provided equation sheet on the test, as well as equations written on the board as we proceed through each unit. • Follow our problem solving procedures carefully and don’t cut corners!

  17. Make-Ups and Late Work • If you know you will be absent TALK TO ME AHEAD OF TIME! • If you knew about an assignment/test before your absence, you will hand it in/take the test THE DAY YOU RETURN. • To make-up labs and tests, you have no more than 1 week to make it up before or after school. • General rule for late work assigned during unforeseen absence: 1 day excused absence = 24 hour grace period. • One graded assignments, you can receive 80% credit for 1 week following the due date. After that it’s 50% completion credit. • ABSOLUTELY NO LATE WORK AFTER THE UNIT TEST

  18. Extra Credit! • Yes, there will be opportunities. • DO NOT ASK FOR IT OR YOU WILL NOT GET IT! • Whining will not help you. • Extra credit will go in at the end of each semester. • You will only receive the extra credit you earned if you have NO MISSING ASSIGNMENTS.

  19. Electronic Textbook • We have a second text resource which is electronic. • Principles of Physics by Kinetic Books • Download and install the program using the instructions on my website no later than Monday, September 9! • Only do this once! We only have one copy per student! • If you have trouble, email the help center listed on my website.

  20. Remind101 • We have an optional texting reminder service. • It is free to sign-up for; I won’t know you’re phone number, only your name. • I use this to remind you of important deadlines and study sessions. • Completely OPTIONAL! • Sign-Up by Monday, September 9!

  21. Safety • Fire Extinguisher is at the front of the room by the teacher computer! • Fire Blanket is in the lab area on the back wall of the room • First Aid Kit is on the weekly calendar board at the front of the classroom! • The safety contract lets you know expectations for lab safety in ISD • Please read and sign it no later than Monday, September 9

  22. Academic Integrity • Academic fraud (cheating) is any attempt made by a student to misrepresent his/her level of achievement by plagiarizing (passing off the work/writing of another person as your own) or aiding another student in such an attempt. • Under no circumstances is it permissible to transfer to your test, homework, lab write-up, or project something that has been written or stated by someone else in an attempt to earn credit for it. • "We worked together" never produces nor justifies identical papers/solutions bearing separate names. Phrases or ideas copied directly from books, articles, web sites, etc., which are claimed to be an original work, would be considered plagiarism.

  23. Academic Integrity • All labs WILL BE COMPLETED ON YOUR OWN. NO EXCEPTIONS! • We will collect data in groups, but you must process and analyze the information for yourself. • DO NOT let someone type up your data tables for you • DO NOT let someone complete the graph and email it to you • DO NOT let someone complete the analysis and copy their answers • All work MUST be yours and yours alone or you will receive a 0 on the assignment, a call home, and a citation for a violation of the academic honesty policy at Skyline • Please sign the academic integrity pledge no later than Monday, September 9!
