War Prep • Axis Powers came together Sept. 1940 • Goal was to keep the U.S. out by forcing us to fight all if we declared war on one • And we’d be stuck w/ a “two ocean war” • The Lend-Lease Act (Mar. 1941) allowed us to provide Britain & Russia w/ weapons they couldn’t afford
War Prep • By grouping subs into “wolf packs,” the Germans successfully sunk much of the supplies we were sending • In the Atlantic Charter, U.S. & Britain agreed to defend each other, create economic ties, & other topics • This doc. led to the United Nations, the formal name of the Allies
War Prep • After the Massacre of Nanking, Japanese military leader Tojo chose to attack France’s Southeast Asia colonies • We responded by cutting off oil to Japan • We were in peace talks with Japan in Nov. 1941 • They rejected our peace offers Dec. 6, they attacked Pearl Harbor Dec. 7 1941
Pearl Harbor • Attack started approx. 8am, ended 9:30am • 2403 Americans killed • Nearly wiped out our entire Pacific fleet
